Wembanyama will miss out on A-List NBA Clubs, This is why

The last game of the 2022-2023 NBA regular season was played on April 9, 2023, and with that, it is only a matter of days before the 2023 NBA draft which is slated for Thursday, 22 June 2023. 

Few prospects have garnered attention but no one in the class of 2023 has got so much attention as the 7鈥�4鈥欌�� French prodigy Victor Wembanyama. By now everybody is talking about him and all teams are salivating to land the projected number 1 draft, Wembanyama.

Every team might want the player but only a few will be lucky to even be on the contending list to sign Wemby on a rookie contract. You might think that the top prospect always lands on the best team of the season, but that is not how things work in the NBA.

Realizing that the season is complete, we can see the final standings of all the NBA teams in both the Eastern and Western conferences. As the top six teams in both the Eastern Conference and Western Conference, ranked by winning percentage, directly advance to the playoffs, the 14 teams that do not make the playoffs prepare to get the top slots in the draft.

Wembanyama To Philadelphia?

Although only the top four picks are decided by the lottery, the team with the worst record, or the team that holds the draft rights of the team with the worst record, has the best chance to obtain a higher draft pick.

As things stand right now, the chances of winning the first overall pick in the draft lottery are 14% higher for the Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons, and San Antonio Spurs combined. Looking at how these teams finished their season, there’s is room for improvement and the teams have to work their way up to be in the upper echelon teams. The Detroit Pistons finished last in Eastern Conference winning only 17 games of the overall 82 games they played. The San Antonio Spurs finished last in the Western Conference winning only 22 of their season regular games which are tied with the Houston Rockets who finished 14th in the Western Conference. 

Looking at those teams and the season they had in 2022-23, it is not much to be psyched to join either of them even though some show signs of future growth. That being said, Wembanyama will likely miss out on the cr猫me de la cr猫me teams but he will be hoping to get a build team around him which he could lead to glory. With a 3% chance of winning the first pick, the Dallas Mavericks complete the Top 10 teams with the highest chance of landing the number one draft pick and one of the best-performing teams to be in contention of signing Wemby.

It seems Victor won鈥檛 possibly play for the Milwaukee Bucks or the Denver Nuggets who clinched the Eastern and Western Conferences respectively and would be forced to settle for less. 

Perhaps we might be judging too early and Wembanyama could revive the team he might end up in and lead them to be some of the most revered teams in the 2023-24 season. It has been done before and Wemby could also do it. This is mainly because of his outward skills which have led the Minnesota Timberwolves centre and  his fellow Frenchman Rudy Gobert to say, 鈥淚 think he’s going to be very unique.鈥� Let us wait and see how it all plays out.
