Prague’s historic Klementinum Gallery is hosting a unique exhibition this summer. The event brings a splash of Polish culture to the heart of the Czech capital. The “Polish Alphabet Book” showcases 44 eye-catching posters created by eleven young Polish artists, each representing a famous work or figure from Poland’s rich cultural history.

Running from June 12 to July 31, 2024, this free exhibition offers visitors a colourful journey through Poland’s modern national culture.  Can you sum up a country’s culture in just 44 works? that is the question that it aims to answer.

“We wanted to highlight Poland’s international cultural brands,” says exhibition curator Maria Kowalski. “From literature and music to visual arts and film, these posters capture the essence of Polish creativity.”

Famous Names, Fresh Designs

Visitors will spot familiar names like Andrzej Wajda, StanisÅ‚aw Lem, and Olga Tokarczuk among the featured works. But it’s not just about the big names. The real stars are the young artists who have reimagined these cultural icons in bold, experimental poster designs.

“It’s like a visual alphabet of Polish culture,” explains Jan Nowak, one of the participating artists. “We’re paying tribute to our heritage while adding our own modern twist.”

A Nod to Poster Tradition

The exhibition also honors Poland’s famous poster-making tradition. After World War II, Polish artists became known worldwide for their unique and artistic movie posters.

“These young artists are carrying on a proud legacy,” says Kowalski. “They’re proving that the art of the poster is still alive and relevant in the digital age.”

The Klementinum Gallery has set up a special reading corner where visitors can learn more about the featured artists and works.

Local Impact

Prague’s large Polish community is excited about the exhibition. “It’s a great way to share our culture with our Czech neighbors,” says Agnieszka Wójcik, a Polish expat living in Prague. “I can’t wait to bring my Czech friends to see it.”

The free admission is expected to draw both tourists and locals to the Klementinum Gallery. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the exhibition offers a cool, cultural escape during Prague’s warm summer days.

If you are looking for something different to do in Prague this summer, the “Polish Alphabet Book” exhibition promises a visually stunning and thought-provoking experience. Don’t miss this chance to see Poland’s cultural icons through fresh, young eyes in one of Prague’s most beautiful historic settings.
