Known for its stunning, award-winning beaches, Portugal has continually claimed top spots in award lists, and this year is no different. The European tourist hotspot has a record 440 beaches, marinas and boats in 2024, adding 8 more from last year. According to the European Blue Flag Association, this makes it the second country in the world with the highest number of award-winning river beaches.

In an announcement by José Archer, the president of the European Blue Flag Association, Portugal has 398 beaches across 103 municipalities. This comes as the next bathing season approaches, and beach lovers get ready to enjoy summer’s best in the water.

A beach is designated as ‘Blue Flag’ if it complies with certain criteria. This includes space, water quality, safety, services, surveillance and people’s environmental awareness. The increase in the number of Blue Flag beaches in the region has been welcomed as ‘good news’ for the country’s tourism sector.

José Archer also noted Portugal’s numerous inland beaches whose number continues to grow. ‘Portugal stands out enormously in terms of its inland beaches. We are, worldwide, the second country with the most inland [river] beaches, with 49, more than double that of Spain and Italy, a number that deserves to be highlighted”, he added.
