Known for its stunning, award-winning beaches, Portugal has continually claimed top spots in award lists, and this year is no different. The European tourist hotspot has a record 440 beaches, marinas and boats in 2024, adding 8 more from last year. According to the European Blue Flag Association, this makes it the second country in the world with the highest number of award-winning river beaches.
In an announcement by Jos茅 Archer, the president of the European Blue Flag Association, Portugal has 398 beaches across 103 municipalities. This comes as the next bathing season approaches, and beach lovers get ready to enjoy summer鈥檚 best in the water.
A beach is designated as 鈥楤lue Flag鈥� if it complies with certain criteria. This includes space, water quality, safety, services, surveillance and people鈥檚 environmental awareness. The increase in the number of Blue Flag beaches in the region has been welcomed as 鈥榞ood news鈥� for the country鈥檚 tourism sector.
Jos茅 Archer also noted Portugal鈥檚 numerous inland beaches whose number continues to grow. 鈥楶ortugal stands out enormously in terms of its inland beaches. We are, worldwide, the second country with the most inland [river] beaches, with 49, more than double that of Spain and Italy, a number that deserves to be highlighted鈥�, he added.
