Many European destinations are endeavoring to cut their emissions for sustainability, but some, including Portugal’s charming Porto, have stood out for their efforts.

A study by , a car hire company has revealed some of the most sustainable cities in Europe after analyzing data on various factors. These include pollution levels, nature areas closest to airports, number of vegan restaurants, and the hotels with EV charging points. Each city was then awarded a score out of 100.

At the top of the list is Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital, with a total score of 89. Zurich followed closely with a total score of 88, with five percent of its hotels having EV charging points. At third place is Paris, boasting over 300 green spaces.

Porto claimed the 19th spot, making it to the top 20. Portugal is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations in Europe, boasting incredible cities with rich experiences. Beyond its capital, Lisbon, with its historic neighborhoods and iconic landmarks, Porto beckons with its numerous treats.

It charms visitors with its rich history, evident in its UNESCO-listed center brimming with colorful buildings, azulejo tiles, and Baroque churches.  Beyond the historic core, the city vibrates with a youthful energy, boasting beautiful architecture like the São Francisco Church and Clérigos Tower, all while offering a taste of Portugal’s famous Port wine produced in the nearby Douro Valley.

The city has cut its carbon emissions significantly and aims to be nearly carbon neutral by 2030. They’re achieving this through a multi-pronged approach, including switching to renewable energy sources, promoting electric vehicles, and improving energy efficiency in buildings.  They’re also looking at innovative solutions like fostering a circular economy and managing water resources responsibly.
