A recent study has suggested that Portugal is a perfect destination for those seeking to swim in some of the world’s bluest waters. Researchers at CV Villas set out to settle the age-old debate of ‘where’s the world’s bluest sea?’ The results were surprising.

The method used featured an analysis of unedited Google Maps screenshots of 200 beaches around the world. Using a color dropper tool, they captured the RGB code of each body of water. They then employed the colormine.org calculator to determine which locations boasted water closest to YInMn Blue, considered the ideal blue shade.

Portugal claimed two spots in the top 25! Praia do Carvalho, near Praia do Carvoeiro resort town, secured an impressive 8th place. This secluded beach, framed by towering cliffs and known for its soft, golden sand, offers a breathtaking combination of turquoise water and dramatic scenery.

It is relatively small, and being sheltered from the wind, is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Praia de Boneca also made the list, snagging 25th place. At the top of list was Pasqyra Beach in Albania, which is also often referred to as ‘Mirror Beach’.

While this study provides a fascinating perspective, it’s worth noting it’s a single analysis, and other methodologies might yield different results. Nevertheless, it adds to the growing reputation of Portugal’s stunning coastline, where sunseekers can expect not just beautiful beaches but also some of the world’s most captivating blue waters.
