Step into a time machine at Prague’s National Museum, where the “Windows into Prehistory” exhibition is turning wide-eyed wonder into a daily occurrence. Running until 30th November, 2024, this is not your typical stuffy museum display – it’s a vibrant journey through the Czech Republic’s ancient past that’s got both kids and adults buzzing.

Imagine standing eye-to-eye with a life-sized dinosaur or reaching out to touch a real fossil. That is exactly what visitors are experiencing and the excitement is palpable. “I thought my son’s jaw might hit the floor when he saw the woolly mammoth,” laughs Marie Dvorak, a local mom. “He’s been talking about becoming a ‘dinosaur scientist’ ever since!”

The museum has pulled out all the stops to make prehistory pop. Forget dusty display cases – here, fossils come to life through clever animations, and comic book-style panels turn complex science into page-turning adventures. Even the tiniest trilobite gets its moment in the spotlight, while massive ammonites and Prague’s very own dinosaur, Burianosaurus, steal the show.

But it is not all about the big and scary. The exhibition takes visitors on a whirlwind tour through time, from the earliest plants wobbling onto land to the saber-toothed cats that once prowled these parts. Along the way, kids (and let’s face it, plenty of adults) are getting their hands dirty with interactive displays that bring the past to life.

“We wanted to create something that would ignite a passion for science,” explains the museum’s director. “When you see a child’s eyes light up as they touch a real fossil or watch a prehistoric battle unfold, you know you’re onto something special.”

The prehistoric thrills don’t stop there. A massive meteorite from Argentina has landed in Prague, and a darkened room filled with glowing minerals feels like stepping onto an alien planet. It’s the perfect mix of “wow” factor and hands-on learning.

Open daily from 10  to am 6 pm, “Windows into Prehistory” is quickly becoming Prague’s hottest ticket for curious minds of all ages. For the dinosaur fanatic or those just looking for a cool way to spend an afternoon, why not take a walk on the prehistoric side? After all, it is not every day you can travel millions of years into the past without leaving the city centre.
