A major overhaul of Prague’s public transport system has been implemented, aimed at making navigation easier for both residents and tourists. The city’s vast array of metros, trams, buses and ferries simplified.

Streamlined Ticketing System

One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a new, simplified ticketing system. Visitors can now purchase a single “Prague Travel Pass” that covers all modes of public transportation, including the metro, trams, buses, and even the popular Petrin funicular. This pass, available in 24-hour, 72-hour, and 7-day options. Eliminating the need for multiple tickets and reducing confusion for first-time visitors.

“Our goal is to make Prague as accessible as possible,” says Jana Novotna, spokesperson for the Prague Public Transport Company. “With this new system, tourists can focus on enjoying our beautiful city rather than worrying about which ticket to buy.”

Expansion of Night Services

Recognizing the city’s vibrant nightlife, authorities have significantly expanded night transportation services. The metro will now run until 1 Am on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends, while night tram and bus routes have been increased by 30%. This move is expected to benefit late-night revellers and support workers in the hospitality industry.

Tech-Driven Improvements

To further enhance the travel experience, a new mobile app has been launched. This app provides real-time updates on transportation schedules, allows for mobile ticket purchases, and offers guided tours of the city using public transport routes. For even greater inclusivity the app is available in multiple languages, catering to Prague’s diverse international visitors.

Environmental Considerations

In line with Prague’s commitment to sustainability, the city has announced that 50% of its bus fleet will be electric by the end of 2025. This initiative is part of a broader plan to reduce the city’s carbon footprint. Less emissions will improve air quality in the historic centre.

Local businesses, particularly those outside the main tourist areas, are optimistic about the potential increase in foot traffic. “We’re hopeful that better transport links will bring more visitors to our neighbourhood,” says Marie Dvorakova, owner of a cafe in Prague 7.

With these enhancements, the city is establishing itself as a benchmark for effective and tourist-friendly urban transportation.
