Roma culture comes alive in Prague at the 26th edition of the Khamoro Roma Arts Festival starting Sunday, May 26, 2024. The annual celebration will run an entire week, culminating on June 1. The event will include parades, cooking demos, a children’s day, and countless music performances. Khamoro translates to the sun in the Romani language.
According to Slovo 21, the festival organizer each year attracts more than 10,000 visitors. Over the past 25 years, the festival has seen more than 260 bands from about 33 countries perform on its stages. The festival aims to connect the Roma minority with other communities through the arts. At the same time, organizers cite it as an opportunity to combat stereotypes linked to the group.
Moreover, this year’s program is packed with activities. It will feature traditional Roma music and a parade of Roma artists. These artists will march through Prague鈥檚 city center. There will be plenty of gypsy jazz concerts, art exhibitions, film screenings, and a cooking show dedicated to Roma cuisine.
Better still, the theme this year will explore the state of education for young Roma men and women. This section is dubbed 鈥淭he Future of Young Roma鈥�. The category will express the education opportunities and challenges encountered by Roma youth since the 1989 Velvet Revolution.
Subsequently, Roma students at all education levels from elementary, and secondary, up to university will take part. To push the education agenda further, the Romea organization will have a presentation. The institution is a co-organizer of the event and will present its new campaign on the education subject.
Where to Spot the Real Action
The festival will kick off at the Prague Exhibition Grounds in the Gau膷 (Couch) area on May 26. The Khamoro Party will open the festival with performances from Slovak funk musicians. Expect the likes of renowned vocalist Igor Kmeto and emerging singer Vanesa Hor谩kov谩.
On Monday, May 27, the Slovak National Theatre will have performances on Western Slovakia historical events. One significant event they will perform will be the October 1928 upsets in Western Slovakia that saw rioters attack a Roma settlement in the region, leaving six people dead.
Beyond theatre acts, visitors will enjoy Gypsy jazz concerts scheduled for the evenings of May 27-28. To climax the classical music performances will be the Lavutari di Praga ensemble. They will perform on Wednesday, May 29, in the Jerusalem Synagogue.
The traditional party will begin on Friday, May 31. Parades of over 100 musicians, dancers, and about 200 children from folklore ensembles will march within Prague鈥檚 city center. The procession will start at the Wenceslas Square and head to the Old Town Square.
Come and eat! on Saturday afternoon, June 1, at the culinary show known as Aven te chal! It means (Come and eat!). This event will be hosted at the (A)VOID Caf茅 along the Vltava River embankment near the Jir谩sek Bridge. Award-winning Czech chef Pavel Berky will prepare a family three-bean goulash recipe and Gypsy Burgers for guests.
Still, on Saturday, a children鈥檚 day event will place at Park Portheimka. To crown the week will be a gala concert at SaSaZu on Saturday evening. It will feature Roma artists from at least seven countries. This includes Macedonia, Hungary, Spain, and Portugal. Also, Latvia, France, the Czech Republic and more.
The Roma people mostly live in Europe. With high populations in the Slavic-speaking regions of the Balkans and central Europe. You will find them in Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Montenegro. Further, many Roma are living in Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. As well as Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary.
Catch the Khamoro Festival across different locations in Prague. Such as the Jazz Dock, SaSaZu restaurant, cultural centers La Fabrika, and the Gau膷. You can head to Atlas Cinema and Cervantes Institute for film screenings. While exhibitions will be on display at the Gallas Palace.
