End of an Era: Southampton’s 10-Year EPL Reign Cut Short in Heartbreaking Relegation

The Saints were promoted for the 2012–13 season, but after losing 2-0 to Fulham at home this past weekend, they have now been demoted by Fulham at St. Mary’s Park

Due to the loss, Ruben Selles and the company now have 24 points with two games remaining, eight points behind Everton, who are currently seated in 17th place in the division, just above the relegation zone. Of course, the present manager isn’t the only one to blame; Ralph Hasenhuttl and Nathan Jones have also had trouble leading this season.

Southampton has seen a decade full of highs and lows as Mauricio Pochettino’s time on the south coast saw them rise to a top-10 team. Before Ronald Koeman took over for a couple of seasons and guided them to their best-ever Premier League finish of sixth in 2015–16, the Argentine took them to eighth. Under Claude Puel, they also advanced to the Carabao Cup final, where they were defeated by Man United 3-2 despite cult hero Manolo Gabbiadini scoring twice.

Star players like Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana, Virgil van Dijk, Rickie Lambert, and Luke Shaw all made an impression while playing in the Premier League before making significant transfers to other Premier League clubs. Even though they excelled in player development for many seasons, the Saints ultimately struggled to replace their departing talents.

Ward-Prose and Romeo Lavia are two players that are said to be leaving Southampton this summer. It is also unknown whether or not Selles will be trusted to lead Southampton in the Championship next season.

We are hopeful to see the Saints promoted once more from Championship if they work for it. For now, they bid goodbye to  Premier League for the 2022/2023 campaign.
