As temperatures soar across Czechia, swimming enthusiasts are facing an unexpected hurdle: a growing number of popular swimming spots have been declared off-limits due to harmful bacteria levels. At least ten well-loved sites, including the Orlik Reservoir at Podolsko in South Bohemia, have been affected by these bans, which have been put in place by health authorities. The cause? A significant increase in cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, fueled by the intense summer heat.

”We’ve had to close at least ten popular swimming spots across the country,” said Ms Novakova, a spokesperson for the Czech Health Ministry. “It’s not what we want to do, but we must protect people’s health.”

One of the closed areas is the Orlik Reservoir in South Bohemia. This is usually a favourite place for both locals and tourists to cool off in the summer heat.

A local resident, shared his disappointment: “I have been coming to Orlik every summer for years. It is sad to see it closed, but I understand why.”

Cyanobacteria can cause problems like skin rashes, stomach issues, and even more serious health problems. The bacteria grow quickly when the weather is hot and there is not much rain.

While some swimming areas have gotten better and reopened, experts say people should be careful when swimming in any natural water during hot weather.

“If the water looks green or has a bad smell, it is best not to swim there,” advised Dr. Marie Horakova, a water quality expert. “Even if there’s no official ban, it’s always good to be cautious.”

For tourists visiting Prague and other parts of Czechia, this news means checking ahead before planning a swimming trip. Many indoor pools and some cleaner natural areas are still open for swimming.

As the summer continues, health officials will keep testing the water and hope to reopen more swimming spots when it is safe. Until then, both locals and visitors will need to find other ways to stay cool in the Czech summer heat.
