Smith thinks the French phenom is a poor man鈥檚 taller version of Kevin Durant

Everything Victor does now seems like a bonus because his impression has already piqued interest around the world. Wembanyama, who stands 7’4″ and has a wingspan of nearly 8 feet, is physically equipped to rule on both ends of the court. But what has distinguished him is his skill and overall style of play.

Despite his height, he has a quick first step and excellent ball-handling skills that enable him to easily get through the defence and make his shot. His shooting range reaches past the three-point line and is effortless and fluid.

Additionally, his length and athleticism make him a formidable rim protector and a disruptive force in passing lanes on defence.

With all these qualities, the average person would be impressed but the case is quite different for Stephen A. Smith. The American sports television personality did not mince his words during a show on NBA Countdown.

He said, “When I think about this kid right here, he seems to me to be a poor man鈥檚 taller version of the great Kevin Durant. He鈥檚 got ball-handling skills. He鈥檚 got a J. He鈥檚 got a perimeter game. He can get to the hole. He has those skills. But he鈥檚 rail thin.

And then that makes me think of Greg Oden. It makes me think of Sam Bowie. It makes me think of Chet Holmgren, the No. 2 overall pick in this past June鈥檚 draft that ain鈥檛 even playing this year because he鈥檚 out injured. We鈥檝e seen big dudes who were relatively skinny.

This comes as no surprise because a lot of pundits have been sceptical about Wemby鈥檚 build and physique and their first thought is if Victor will be able to survive the intensity in the NBA.

A major concern to many is that tall players are prone to injuries and the thought of Victor being tall is a major worrying factor. We have seen it with Yao Ming and Manute Bol whose careers got cut short because of numerous injuries and Wemby standing close to them does not make him an exception.

The fact that Victor is classified as having a thin build and weighing 230 pounds gives scouts who are compulsively following the French prodigy too many questions and talking points. Some people believe that after Victor is chosen in the June draft, it will be easy to tell him that he has to gain muscle and weight.

Victor’s team, however, insists that’s not their primary concern at the moment and that they are instead concentrating on other matters.

The focus on Victor gaining weight, on the other hand, has been referred to as a “mistake” by Victor’s agent who said; 鈥淭he weight will come over time, you know, but the focus on weight is a mistake, I鈥檓 100 per cent sure on that. If you put too much weight too quickly on Victor鈥檚 body, it鈥檚 not going to last. For sure, he will be injury-prone.鈥�

Looks like Wembanayama鈥檚 camp is not worried about a thing as Victor is set to join the NBA and perhaps everybody else should stop worrying.

This confidence proves that everything else is in perfect play and it’s just a matter of time before Victor takes charge, after all, Victor has been dubbed an alien by LeBron James and this just shows how different the French phenom is.
