“Ensure the Safety and Security of Your Products,” Kamala Harris Tells Top Tech Executives

On Thursday, 4th May 2023, top tech executives attended a meeting at the White House. The agenda of the meeting was supposed to discuss the development, regulations, and risks that AI poses to people.

The two-hour meeting, hosted by VP Kamala Harris, was attended by The CEOs of Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic. US President Joe Biden also briefly attended the meeting.

He told the CEOs that their efforts in AI development had “enormous potential and enormous danger.” “And I hope you can educate us as to what you think is most needed to protect society as well as to the advancement,” he added.

The meeting, according to the White House, featured a “frank and constructive discussion” between the tech executives and the Biden administration. They addressed the need for tech companies to be more transparent with the government about their AI technology as well as the need to ensure the safety of such products and protect them from malicious attacks.

Despite just being in its infancy, AI has generated significant buzz and developed massively in the past few months. With the development of technology, so have the concerns about the harm this technology might bring to the world.

From fake news to the fear of “nuclear-level catastrophes” according to Stanford University experts. Previously, tech executives such as Elon Musk and politicians have called for the government’s intervention in AI regulation.

In an open letter, Elon Musk and other tech executives said that governments should step in and ensure that AI developers as well as the systems are safe for the public. Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of AI”, recently quit his job to warn humanity of the dangers the technology he played a significant role in developing could have.

In a statement after the meeting, Vice President Kamala Harris said that tech companies “must comply with existing laws to protect the American people” and “ensure the safety and security of their products.”

Harris also said, “As I shared today with CEOs of companies at the forefront of American AI innovation, the private sector has an ethical, moral, and legal responsibility to ensure the safety and security of their products.”

After the meeting, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who was in attendance, told reporters that, “we’re surprisingly on the same page on what needs to happen.”
