Asian visitors to Barcelona are in for an elevated experience as the city gears up to accommodate their preferred payment methods.

In a groundbreaking move, the Barcelona Comerç association has partnered with StarPay, a payment service provider, to allow Asian tourists to make purchases and payments using their familiar apps, just like they would back home.

This innovative collaboration will enable European businesses to receive payments in euros through applications that are not typically used in Europe, thanks to StarPay’s cutting-edge technology.

Asian tourists, known for their high spending power, will now be able to indulge in Barcelona’s offerings without the hassle of exchanging currency or seeking additional authorizations, enjoying the same benefits they enjoy with their payment systems in their home countries.

Through StarPay, businesses in Barcelona will have the opportunity to integrate with the most popular Asian payment apps, including Alipay and WeChat Pay from China, Kakao Pay from South Korea, and PayPay from Japan.

These apps boast a staggering 1.26 billion users, making this partnership a game-changer for the city’s commerce.

Pròsper Puig, the president of Barcelona Comerç, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating that it will “allow the promotion of the commerce of the neighborhoods of the Catalan capital with effective tools that are commonly used among Chinese visitors, which will, in turn, contribute to bringing the benefits of this tourism to the high purchasing power in the neighborhoods.”

Javier Castrillo, the founder of StarPay, echoed the sentiment, asserting that “Barcelona businesses to take a qualitative leap in their internationalization.”

But the benefits don’t stop there. The partnership will also introduce a virtual City Card, equipped with a search engine for businesses, promotions, and tourist attractions.

The app will offer cultural and public transport discounts, as well as recommendations for gastronomic and tourist activities, ensuring a seamless and immersive experience for Asian visitors.

The ultimate goal of this collaboration is to offer Asian tourists curated tourist routes through Barcelona, providing an alternative to traditional itineraries and allowing them to explore the city’s hidden gems and local flavors.

With the burden of dealing with money agents and currency conversion lifted, Asian visitors to Barcelona can now fully immerse themselves in the city’s magnificence, indulging in its culture, cuisine, and commerce with ease and convenience.

This innovative partnership sets a new standard for hospitality and internationalization, paving the way for a truly globalized experience in one of Europe’s most captivating destinations.
