Lampard Back to Chelsea on Interim Basis

Bruno Saltor must be completely baffled by the latest news. Potter’s assistant has only just been appointed as interim manager himself but is already set to find himself out of the job as Boehly and Eghbali go rogue.

His first game in charge was pretty encouraging, too, as Chelsea held Liverpool to a goalless draw – a game they really should have won.

If you enjoy soap operas or reality television, you should keep an eye on what’s going on at Chelsea Football Club this season. No one could have predicted the twist in the newest episode. As Graham Potter was abruptly fired from the program over the weekend, a former prominent character, Frank Lampard, is due to make a sensational return to the cast.

Lampard has been out of a job since January when Everton fired him after less than a year in charge.

The former Chelsea and England player was in charge of the Blues from July 2019 to January 2021, when he was replaced by Thomas Tuchel.

Graham Potter, Tuchel’s replacement, was fired on Sunday.

Chelsea is 11th in the Premier League and drew 0-0 with Liverpool on Tuesday, with Lampard, 44, in attendance at Stamford Bridge. Despite spending more than £550 million on new players this season, the Blues sit 11 points behind the top four.

On Saturday, they play Wolves in the Premier League before facing Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on April 12.

Lampard previously managed the club, guiding Chelsea to the FA Cup final in his first season after joining from Derby County.

Lampard, the club’s all-time leading scorer, led them to 44 wins from 84 games, but he suffered five defeats in his last eight league games, as many as he had in the preceding 23. After being sacked by Chelsea, he was named Everton boss in January 2022 but was sacked eight days shy of his one-year anniversary in the role after nine defeats in 12 Premier League games.

According to reports, Boehly and Eghbali were taken aback by the fans’ raucous reaction to Chelsea’s dismal form in the latter days of Potter’s reign, and selecting Lampard at this stage smells of an attempt to soothe the fanbase.

There are very few Chelsea fans who would not want to see the club legend return to Stamford Bridge in some capacity – albeit not as head coach – and this temporary gig allows the ownership to curry favor without committing to anything long-term, buying themselves some time as they look to recover from what has been a farcical first 11 months at the helm.

The choice to delay appointing a permanent manager, especially while such excellent prospects are available, is quite problematic.

At this point, the frontrunners are Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique. They are outstanding managers who are now out of work and thus should be attainable targets for a quick appointment.

It has been rumored that Nagelsmann would enjoy some time off after being fired by Bayern, but it appears that the Chelsea position has piqued his interest enough to put those plans on hold.

Striking now would give either coach plenty of time to get to know the team and put their ideas into action before deciding on a transfer strategy at the conclusion of the season. Both men also have experience in the latter stages of the Champions League – Chelsea’s last hope of silverware AND qualification for next season’s competition. Luis Enrique even won the competition in 2015.

All eyes are now on Frank Lampard to lead Chelsea to at least Conference League qualification in the Premier League or to the Champions League Semi-finals, where they will meet Real Madrid in less than a week.
