Elon Musk Accused Of Actively Promoting Bullying On Twitter

On Thursday, LGBTQ advocates expressed their displeasure and discontent with Elon Musk as he admitted he would allow users to continue freely misgendering people on the social media site.

On June 1st, the first day of Pride Month, Elon Musk disclosed that while he uses the appropriate pronouns according to someone’s preferences, including a transgender person, he was not going to enforce it as a policy on the social media platform.

The comments came following a complaint that was issued on Thursday morning by Jeremy Boreing, CEO of The Daily Wire regarding Twitter’s suppression of a video titled “What Is A Woman?”

What Is a Woman? (2022) is an American film about gender as well as transgender issues. The film was released by conservative website The Daily Wire.

Boreing further complained that Twitter terminated a distribution agreement with the publication because the video contained two instances of transgender misgendering. He later said in a post that he thought the incident violated free speech.

“@elonmusk is not beholden to conservatives. He has the right to run his business as he sees fit. But if Twitter is going to throttle one side of one of the most important debates facing society, it cannot claim to champion free speech,” Boreing said in his Twitter thread.

Responding to Boreing, Elon Musk said, “This was a mistake by many people on Twitter.

It is definitely allowed. Whether or not you agree with using someone’s preferred pronouns, not doing so is at most rude and certainly breaks no laws.”

After his remarks, LGBTQ organizations on Twitter and even off were quick to denounce Musk’s stance.

According to the organizations, the remarks opened the door to more bullying of transgender people on Twitter and online in general.

Users continued complaining of Twitter suppressing the video. Many complained they were unable to share the film or comment on it, limiting its spread. At 8:57 pm Eton Thursday, Elon Musk via tweet provided an explanation for this.

He disclosed that the video was “sensitive content” and that Twitter would not actively recommend it to people. However, the pressure from the public was relentless and on Friday the video was made shareable.

“Works now. The only limit is that it will not be placed next to advertising,” Musk tweeted on Friday at 8:28 a.m. ET.

This was a few minutes after Musk himself retweeted the video and pinned it at the top of his profile saying, “Every parent should watch this.”
