Kicking off next week from 5th to 21st April 2024, the annual Mafra International Organ Festival will feature concerts in the Basilica of Mafra National Palace and several local churches.

Mafra, part of the greater Lisbon subregion is most known for the iconic, baroque-style Mafra National Palace, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is easily accessible from Lisbon, and visitors can attend the festival quite conveniently.

The festival usually brings together several notable Portuguese organists from different generations, and critically acclaimed international artists. The shows are free, except the grand concert at the Basilica of the National Palace of Mafra. The festival is organized by the Mafra City Council, in conjunction with National Palace of Mafra and the Vigararia de Mafra.

From the official website communication, this year’s edition invites audiences to listen, for the first time, to the Gray & Davison Organ from the Convent of Inglesinhos in Lisbon.

The organ was restored by Master Dinarte Machado and has been recently installed in the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. The latter is where the concert for its presentation will take place on April 6, at 9 pm. It is located in Enxara do Bispo.

The concert is part of the festival’s program, and will be performed by the choir of the Capella de S. Vicente under the direction of Pedro Rodrigues. They will be accompanied by the organists João Vaz. Admission is free, and subject to space availability.
