As the summer sun bathes Prague in its warm embrace, travelers and locals alike have a new historical haven to explore: the Czernin Palace Gardens. Tucked away in the Hradcany district, these stunning Baroque gardens, once the exclusive domain of diplomats and aristocrats, are now open to the public from June 8 to September 29, 2024. The gardens welcome visitors every Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., providing a serene escape amidst the bustle of the city.

The gardens, which began to take shape alongside the construction of the Czernin Palace in the late 1600s, have witnessed centuries of Czech history. Today, they stand as a testament to the enduring allure of Baroque design, meticulously restored under the guidance of renowned architect Pavel Janák in the 1930s.

As you wander the manicured paths, it’s easy to imagine the whispered conversations and political intrigues that may have unfolded here. The garden’s centerpiece, a magnificent statue of Hercules wrestling the Lernaean Hydra, has watched over these grounds since 1746. It was crafted by Prague’s own Ignac Frantisek Platzer.

But the Czernin Palace Gardens are more than just a relic of the past.  “It’s a chance for everyone to experience a slice of history and find a moment of tranquillity in our bustling city.”

Visitors are encouraged to bring a book, a picnic, or simply their curiosity as they explore the garden’s various terraces and fountains. The cascading fountain provides a soothing soundtrack to your afternoon.

It’s worth noting that while the gardens are now accessible, the palace itself remains closed to the public, continuing its role as the seat of the Czech Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  It is a reminder that sometimes, the most rewarding travel experiences come from stepping off the beaten path.

So, whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply in search of a quiet spot to escape the summer heat, make sure to add the Czernin Palace Gardens to your Prague itinerary.
