When planning a vacation in Barcelona, it’s essential to pack the right items to ensure an enjoyable experience.

However, carrying a large suitcase, backpack, and smaller hand luggage may come at an additional cost. Recent reports indicate that you might face extra charges for your luggage when traveling to this vibrant city.

According to Murcia Today, a Spanish court has ruled that airlines have the authority to set their luggage policies, a decision that favors major carriers like Ryanair, EasyJet, and Vueling.

Ryanair, in particular, had previously gone to court to challenge an earlier ruling by the European Parliament, which unanimously voted in October for the need for common hand luggage allowances across all airlines.

However, this ruling has not yet been passed into law.

With the court’s decision supporting airlines’ right to establish their luggage policies, Strasbourg aims to have the EU approve regulations that establish common rules on luggage that all airlines must follow.

Nonetheless, Ryanair, which operates flights to Barcelona, remains determined to fight this regulation until its demands are met.

Ryanair’s CEO stated, “We are allowed to set prices for our products; it is a fundamental right under European law. There is not enough space inside the plane for everyone to carry a carry-on suitcase and another under their seat, so we limit it so that those who want to have the convenience of carrying an additional bag can take it.”

While the EU believes that customers should not be charged extra for carrying their hand luggage, considering it their right, Ryanair passengers traveling to Barcelona are advised to only carry a small personal bag measuring no more than 40 x 20 x 25 centimeters, which can fit under the seat in front of them.

Anything larger might require them to be prepared to lighten their wallets due to additional fees.
