A British Nigerian travel content creator, Pelumi Nubi, has made history by becoming the first Black woman to drive from London to Lagos, covering a distance of over 10,000 kilometres in her purple Peugeot 107. The journey, which took two months and saw Nubi travelling through around 17 countries, including France, Morocco, Senegal, and Sierra Leone, was an attempt to connect the two places she considered home.

According to , Nubi embarked on the journey on January 24 after seeing the story of Kunle Adeyanju, a Nigerian man who rode from London to Lagos by bike. She began looking into whether any Black women had attempted the journey by car and couldn’t find any record of any. Nubi journeyed by day and slept in her car by night, surviving a terrifying accident in Ivory Coast that damaged her car but didn’t deter her from achieving her goal.

On April 7, Nubi arrived at the University of Lagos for a colourful and buoyant festival held in her honour. The celebration lasted the day and rolled into Monday, where Nubi was named brand ambassador of tourism in Lagos state and awarded a new car and home by the Governor of Lagos state to go with her new title.

In order to ensure that her vehicle would be suitable for the 10,000-kilometer journey, Nubi had it specially modified, adding a bed and a kitchen facility inside. “That took about a month, trying to fit everything into a Peugeot 107,” she says. Although the journey wasn’t always seamless, with Nubi juggling multiple things and often feeling lonely, she never gave up on her goal.

Nubi believes that she is now the first Black solo female traveller to have driven from London to Lagos, but she isn’t hugely interested in such titles and says that this was never her goal. “It was very much about inspiring people. In terms of, ‘You think London to Lagos is impossible? I’ve done that.’ It was about the bigger picture. The accolades are nice, but it doesn’t scratch the surface of what I was trying to achieve.”

Nubi’s historic journey has inspired many people and has shown that anything is possible with determination and hard work. She is now looking forward to spending time with her friends and family, many of whom travelled to Lagos to meet her at the grand finale, as well as having the opportunity to celebrate in style.
