French Prodigy Says It Was The Best Decision To Leave ASVEL For Metropolitans 92

Magic Johnson calling Wembanyama the best player was not an understatement, Victor is actually living the hype and he has been doing what we expect the best player to be doing.

Victor Wembanyama is the highest prospected player to ever declare for the NBA in 20 years with the last being in 2003 when LeBron James was declaring for the draft.

There is no question why Victor is getting so much buzz around him, he is 7’4” possesses an 8-foot wingspan and is one of the most versatile players ever. His unique playing style and talent have made him stand out.

Despite his height, he has a quick first step and great ball-handling abilities that enable him to outrun the defence and make his shot. He can shoot beyond the three-point line with ease and fluidity.

Due to his stature and mobility, he is also an excellent rim protector and a force to be reckoned with in passing lanes when playing defence.

Although the draft date is already set for June 22, 2023, and Wembanyama will be looking to join a lucky franchise in the NBA, his journey to stardom has been quite admirable. Michaël Allard first saw Victor’s talent when he saw him when he was only 10 years old.

His remarkable height of 1.80 meters (5 ft 11 in), which initially led Michaël Allard, a young coach for the club, to mistake him for a coach when he saw him sitting on the bench at an under-11 game in 2013, caught the attention of Nanterre. The young player had a specific quality that Michaël noticed, so they started working together to improve his abilities.

Before joining ASVEL of the Pro A to play for T. J. Parker, Wembanyama furthered his inaugural professional experience by playing for the Nanterre 92 senior team and head coach Pascal Donnadieu.

Victor eventually signed on with the LNB Pro A team Metropolitans 92, which intrigued him due to its head coach Vincent Collet’s reputation for developing and giving young players a chance. Due to Collet’s guidance, Wemby attained the current degree of international fame.

Talking of his journey to where he is now, his time at ASVEL might be overlooked. Wembanyama committed to a three-year deal with ASVEL of the Pro A and the EuroLeague on June 29, 2021. ASVEL captured their third straight Pro A title in 2022.

Wembanyama, who led the league with an average of 9.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, was named Pro A’s Best Young Player. He was second in the voting for the EuroLeague Rising Star award to Rokas Jokubaitis, averaging 6.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per game in the competition.

There were promises by the club president Tony Parker who had assured Victor that they will build a team around him but Victor was not impressed enough and went on to join Metropolitans 92.

It was at ASVEL that he won a Championship. The team surely holds a special place in his heart despite his leaving. The young prodigy acknowledged in a recent interview that after exiting ASVEL last season, he initially had some guilt before retrieving his attention because he was leaving the EuroLeague.

He said it was the right decision and leaving it at that time was the best option. He’s quoted, “In hindsight, there was no reason to, I actually don’t. Of course, as a competitor, I would’ve liked to taste the European competition a bit more but I made the choice and it was the best choice.”

Some will argue that leaving ASVEL might have left him and Tony Parker at loggerheads but Victor assures everyone that they are on good terms. Talking to First Team, he says, “I know Tony, there’s no animosity between us. I think the media can distort things a little bit sometimes. He knows I have progressed. It’s a different role.”

Looks like Wembanyama made the right decision when he chose to leave the EuroLeague and join the LNB Pro A as it has set him up perfectly to go first overall this year.

As he will be looking to take NBA by storm fans are left wondering what if he never left ASVEL, Would he still be the highest prospected draft pick ever?
