Barkley Does Not Think Wemby Will Lead The Spurs To An NBA Championship

Wembanyama lives scot-free in Charles Barkley鈥檚 head that鈥檚 for sure. This is true given how much Chuck can鈥檛 keep Victor鈥檚 name out of his mouth amid all the praise surrounding the 19-year olf French prodigy.

Although Barkley has his bragging rights being included in the Naismith Hall of Fame and winning the 1993 NBA MVP, his latest comments might come as too harsh for the budding athlete.

Victor鈥檚 buzz has been compared to that LeBron got back in 2003 when he was just getting into the NBA.

Victor deserves all the praise coming his way, for starters he is a monster among men standing at 7鈥�4鈥�, with an 8-foot wingspan and impeccable athleticism. Victor is lethal at the 3-point arc and his defensive prowess is second to none in his position.

All these praises for a 19-year-old boy might have irked Charles Barkley who has had nothing but cold reception for Victor.

On different occasions, Barkley has called out Wembanyama for not being ready to get to the NBA and that he might not survive the pressure the NBA comes with.

On one occasion alongside Kenny Smith on Inside the NBA Charles Barkley had this to say about Wembanyama: 鈥淓verybody wants this kid to look like he鈥檚 great, but you really can鈥檛 tell until he gets to the NBA.鈥�

Looks like Barkley does not believe in the hype but still wants Wembanyama to prove himself to be seen as NBA-worthy.

Barkley has also thrown shade on Wembanyama鈥檚 body saying that if he ends up at San Antonio, perhaps he might add some weight.

After the San Antonio Spurs beat the Indiana Pacers, Charles could not control his running gag and here鈥檚 how he joked about it, 鈥淚鈥檒l tell you what, Victor Wembanyama will be great in San Antonio. If he goes to San Antonio, he鈥檒l definitely gain some weight,鈥� Barkley said on NBA On TNT.

鈥淗e won鈥檛 have to worry about being skinny down there. He won鈥檛 have to worry about being skinny in San Antonio. Hey, Victor, go to San Antonio, they鈥檒l put some weight on you.鈥�

All that throwing shade and you鈥檇 think that he was about to stop sooner but to everybody’s dismay, he still got the French phenom in his sight.

After the Tuesday, May 16, 2023, NBA Draft Lottery where the San Antonio Spurs landed the first overall pick in the upcoming draft, ESPN had an interview with Wemby to know how he felt about it considering he is going to be the first overall pick.

Wembanyama is asked what the Spurs will get when they pick him and he said,鈥� Aah, you know鈥� team player, I am gonna make everything to win as many games as I can and I am tryna win a ring ASAP so be ready.鈥�

Wembanyama winning a ring ASAP would be iconic but Chuck has a different view of it and had his own tailored response.

Speaking on Sirius XM’s NBA Radio, Barkley said, ‘This notion that just because you have all this hype and you’ve been kicking a** in France all these years. That don’t mean anything when you step on the court next year.’

‘The Spurs ain’t close to winning a championship, young fella! Y’all probably ain’t gonna make the playoffs next year. They’re probably gonna be the third-best team in Texas, Just in Texas!’, Chuck added.

Such strong words from Barkley but we can鈥檛 justify the magnitude since we have not seen Wemby hoop and he might be able to prove him wrong.

Maybe he will live up to the hype or maybe he won鈥檛 that is just a matter of time to find out.

But according to Barkley, Wembanyama wanting a ring ASAP is a bootless attempt and perhaps he should slow down.

The Wemby-wave is way stronger though as he is expected to take the NBA by storm and cancel any doubt there is. The Spurs are counting on his prowess if they pick him when draft day comes on Thursday, June 22, 2023.
