10 Best Neighborhoods for Food in Paris

Admittedly, there aren’t really any neighbourhoods in Paris that I would say are distinctly bad when it comes to food. Even the more run-down areas have their own unique flair for cuisines from around the world, as they tend to offer affordable housing for immigrants and refugees.

The following 10 neighborhoods make for eclectic and inspiring dining hubs — how many have you visited?

How to Pick the Parisian Neighborhood That Will Suit You Best

1. Le Marais in Paris

Eating your way through Paris should start and end in le Marais. Since this was once the Jewish hub of the city, there is fantastic Kosher food and Israeli cuisine throughout the district center.

More than this, le Marais is picture perfect and filled with French cafes, vegan eateries, takeaway joints and conceptual dining experiences.

2. Montmartre in Paris

The district on the hill is no stranger to the culinary scene. As millions of tourists flock here to see the likes of the Sacre Coeur and the I Love You Wall, they are met by ample eateries, traditional brasseries, vegetarian fare and dreamy coffee shops where one can work for hours at a time, accompanied by brunch foods from both the far east and west.

Here, you’ll find yourself surrounded by more French fare than you probably care to sift through. The best brasseries, bistros, cafes, restaurants and fine dining institutions line these streets, ironically in and amongst various fast food chains from around the world. It’s called balance, right?

4. Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris

Situated right on the left bank, as you cross over the Seine, Saint-Germain-des-Présn is widely known for being the home to the biggest and best dining experiences in all of the French capital.

It’s here that Michelin star chefs want to build their empires, and it’s here where budding chefs from around the world come to study cuisine in Paris.

5. Pigalle in Paris

Back toward the hill we go, but before heading up to Montmartre one needs to make a stop in Pigalle at the base. This neighborhood has more to offer than just cabaret dining and 24 hour party-scenes.

Believe it or not, there is a thriving gastronomic scene out here and you can enjoy cuisines from all over the world (if you know where to look). Pigalle is known for great Indian, Chinese, Italian and Halal eateries.

6. Chinatown in Paris

Back in the 70s, thousands of Asian immigrants made their way to Paris while fleeing the war in Vietnam. The only housing that was available was in a neighborhood that is now known as Chinatown, and it goes without saying that this is now the best place in all of Paris to enjoy all types of cuisines from the east.

7. Champs-Elysees in Paris

Lavish? Sometimes. Opulent? Mostly. Overpriced? Always — but darling, this is the Champs-Elysees after all.

This iconic shopping strip is also a fantastic neighborhood for French fare. Filled with brasseries, bistros and cafes, the culinary scene is pretty competitive in this neck of the woods due to the saturated nature of the district — expect phenomenal food at prices to match.

8. Canal Saint Martin in Paris

If you’re at a loss for where to dine, the Canal Saint Martin is a place where you’ll literally never go wrong. Trendy as ever, and lined with some of the most competitive dining institutions in the city, this neighborhood offers something to suit every palate, every budget and every time of day.

9. Oberkampf in Paris

For a neighborhood that’s not overly saturated with tourism, and where locals still enjoy eating amongst travelers, there is no better balance than that of Oberkampf.

Whether you’re craving gourmet pizza, contemporary vegan bistros, or fine dining fusion-style, Oberkampf’s streets are lined with options.

This is a vibrant neighborhood that comes alive by night, so always book dinner and expect to follow it with drinks in one of the street-side cafes.

10. Bourse and Sentier in Paris

Business chic is the energy of the Bourse and Sentier district, and this also happens to be the hub for the textile industry in Paris. The best restaurants in this neck of the woods are the local French eateries — they are intended to cater to the locals who live and work in these streets.

From cafes to brasseries, and even a few Michelin Star establishments, come eat like the locals do.

5 Top Restaurants for Food in Paris

1. Clover Grill

Clover Grill, owned by award-winning chef Jean-François Piège, is a chic establishment well-liked by the fashion and media community. It is a modern French steakhouse that is equally suitable for a business lunch as it is for a leisurely dinner with friends.

The chef discovered a place with two dining rooms and enough area for a custom meat case. Filet, prime rib, or a burger made with beef are the obvious highlights here, but you shouldn’t forget the inventive beginnings like tomato tartare with basil and stracciatella or wild sea bass gravlax with lemon and dill. With a selection of sauces, there are delicious braised prawns and local fish.

2. Épicure

There is no denying that this restaurant has three Michelin stars, as evidenced by the white tablecloths, excellent services, stylish decor, and impressive menu. The nicest tables are located in front of the window that looks out onto the hotel’s (Le Bristol) interior garden because the dining room is large and open.

You may concentrate on an almost religiously-like dining experience because both the music and talking are kept to a minimum. Lean into the fussy Frenchness of everything, however, once Eric Frechon’s first dish is put in front of you, you won’t even notice the decor.

3. Allard

The food at this historic cafe, which opened in 1912 and dates back to that period, resembles still-life photographs from the Time-Life “Foods of the World” series, like a time capsule from your first trip to Europe.

Consider escargots drenched in butter, garlic, and parsley and yummy food such as cassoulet, pâté en croûte, Scottish salmon with Béarnaise sauce, seared scallops with leeks, a beautiful cheese course, and even crêpes Suzette, if you’re looking for the perfect French menu then this is where you’re more likely to find it.

4. Le 52

These customers who go here take their dining seriously and care about more than just the food—they also value having a nice time and feeling comfortable around familiar staff members. They—and the rare out-of-towner—continue to visit because of the menu’s limitless diversity, which changes at least once a month.

Along with more conventional meat and fish cuts, you might also come across fowl, sardines, mackerel, root vegetables like Jerusalem artichokes, and mackerel, all of which can be found and make for a tasty yet inexpensive lunch.

5. Septime

Starting with beautiful, creative, plant- and vegetable-focused cuisine that rotates every two weeks, meals are served in this cosy yet understated Scando-inspired setting. Although the food is ambitious, the restaurant has a comfortable feel that doesn’t make you feel like you’re out of place.

This place is great for bringing out the flavours in each ingredient and experimenting with texture; it is normal to see a combination of raw and cooked foods (prepared using different techniques) on the same plate.

Also, find some time between savoring down delicious meals to enjoy a free guided walking tour through your favorite Parisian neighborhood. They depart daily from all over the city center.
