10 Different Cuisines to Eat in Rome

Yes, Rome is one big buffet of pizza and pasta; cooked just the way nonna intended.

Having eaten my way through the city on numerous occasions, I鈥檓 always pleasantly surprised by the wide range of global cuisines that are on offer around the city. These are ten听 that I enjoyed most, but no doubt you鈥檒l find a handful of your own as you explore this ancient city.

1. Italian: Osteria Bonelli in Rome

Might as well start with one we know and love; I am constantly finding Italian trattorias that I deem 鈥渢he best in Rome鈥�, until next week when I find the next, and the next and the next.

Osteria Bonelli has remained consistent over the years. This is, undeniably, some of the best pasta you鈥檒l find in the city center, and their pizzas, & even vegetable plates, are phenomenal too.

2. Thai: Isola Puket in Rome

Up in the greener spaces of the city is this low-key, affordable and quirky little Thai eatery with a simple yet well executed menu. Thai food is seen as a bit of an anomaly amongst Italians, and most restaurants charge obscene prices for very basic meals.

Isola Puket won鈥檛 break the bank, and you鈥檒l enjoy all of the Thai classics you know and love, from traditional Pad Thai to green and red curries. The best part? You never need to book. They always have space for walk-ins, though reservations are permitted if you prefer.

3. Vegan: Madre Terra in Rome

The vegan scene in Rome isn鈥檛 a big one, but it is growing day by day.

Madre Terra has created a space in which all of the Italian classic dishes can be enjoyed entirely vegan; creamy vegan pastas, cheesy vegan pizzas and delicious Italian desserts.

Most of the menu is gluten free. Madre Terra is a crowd pleaser; most of their clientele aren鈥檛 even usually vegan eaters, they simply like the food.

4. Oragnic: Officina Naturale in Rome

This is another food movement that is slowly building up momentum in Rome. Organic eating is going to become more and more important as the quality of our foods continue to deteriorate. Those in Rome who are already on board with organic eating spend a lot of time at Officina Naturale right in the heart of the city center.

This wonderful cafe offers a variety of menu items to take you from early morning through to the night time. A prefacing halfway point between a day of sight seeing and guided walking tours.

5. Dim Sum: DAMPLINGS in Rome

Rome doesn鈥檛 have a lot of restaurants solely dedicated to dim sum; you can merely find them as side items at a few Asian eateries.

DAMPLINGS has made waves on the left bank of the Tiber. It鈥檚 everything we love about dumpling cuisine, from dim sum to homemade bao.

6. Ethiopian: Mesob Restaurant in Rome

The last place I expected to find authentic Ethiopian food was Rome. Mesob is a city treasure, and I try to eat here at least once a month.

Ethiopian food is a cuisine best shared. It鈥檚 usually comprised of a variety of stews and curries on injera flat bread, eaten with one鈥檚 hands. It鈥檚 a fabulous change of taste and a welcome break from what has likely been days of pizza and pasta.

7. Sushi: Junsei Sushi in Rome

Italians adore their sushi, even though many locals will deny it if you ever try compare the popularity of the dish to something traditionally Italian.

There are a lot of great sushi spots around Rome; I love Junsei in the quiet neighborhood of San Saba on the right bank. For one, it鈥檚 affordable, unlike most sushi spots in the city center. And another high point is how incredibly fast service is.

8. Indian: New Delhi Indian Restaurant in Rome

Indian food in Rome is a treat because they stay open late and are, for the most part, unintentionally vegan, which is great for plant based eaters who need late-night food in the city.

New Delhi鈥檚 food is outstanding. Every single curry will have your mouth watering, and the accompaniment of soft basmati rice & garlic naan breads will have you over the moon.

The restaurant is right by Termini train station in the heart of the city. For many, this neighborhood is their first encounter with the city of Rome, as well as the starting point for a lot of guided walking tours.

9. Mexican: La Punta Expendio de Agave in Rome

Another cuisine I did not expect to find easily in Rome was Mexican. I forgot that Trastevere is one of the most vibrant and diverse neighborhoods, and that Mexican food would be natural to these parts.

Delicious margaritas, tacos, ceviche and more. This is one of the most enjoyable dining experiences you鈥檒l have when you break from the Italian trattorias. Note that they are open until 2am; another late night dining dream.

10. Greek: Grekos in Rome

If the words souvlaki, gyro, dolmade or dakos mean anything to you then you鈥檙e probably already en route to Grekos in Rome.

The food of the Med is served proudly and traditionally at this wonderful Greek cafe in Prati, the neighborhood just next to the Vatican City. The food is both cheap and phenomenal; what more do we need?
