10 Things to do Near the Spanish Steps in Rome

In a fleeting attempt to make the city of Rome more accessible, a set of 135 steps were constructed in 1723, linking the Piazza di SpagnaÌý with the Piazza Trinità dei Monti.

The Piazza di Spagna lies at the bottom of a Roman hillside, while the Piazza Trinità dei Monti sits higher up. The Spanish Stairs give city-dwellers easy access between the two neighborhoods, and consequently the stairs have become a major tourist attraction in Rome.

You’ll find the steps on Rome’s right bank; a vibrant neighborhood with a lot to see and do. Here are 10 things you might like to check out:

1. Throw a Coin Into the Barcaccia Fountain near the Spanish Steps in Rome

5. Shop in the Via dei Condotti near the Spanish Steps in Rome

The Via dei Condotti is a lavish shopping strip just a short walk from the base of the Spanish Steps.

It’s a hub for upmarket fashion houses like Louis Vuitton, Hermès and Dolce & Gabbana. This is one of the most fashionable roads in Rome and it dates back to the ancient times when people crossing the Tiber needed a direct route to the Spanish Steps.

6. Attend a Show at the Theater Salone Margherita near the Spanish Steps in Rome

If you want to attend a real operatic experience while in Rome, but aren’t one for the glitz and glam that contemporary theaters require, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised by Theater Salone Margherita.

This is a small yet wonderfully functional little theatre near the Spanish Steps. There are nightly opera shows where tickets include an inexpensive yet delicious meal at the theatre cafe on site.

There are no subtitles during these performances but I didn’t find they were necessary. I was fully immersed in the performances for the duration of the show.

7. Stroll Through the Villa Borghese near the Spanish Steps in Rome

The Villa Borghese is Rome’s own Central Park. Subjectively, it’s the most beautiful public garden scape in the city, featuring monuments and museums throughout the grounds.

Despite it’s glorious size, the Villa Borghese is not the largest public park in Rome, but rather the third largest. It’s the perfect escape from the concrete-city; come for a picnic, for a stroll or simply with a book.

8. Find the Column of the Immaculate Conception near the Spanish Steps in Rome

This one will be more exciting for some than others. I myself am a big fan of anything depicting the Virgin Mary, so I like to walk past the Column of the Immaculate Conception as often as possible.

This nineteenth century statue lives not too far from the Spanish Steps and towers over us mere mortals down below. It’s a beautiful sight; visit at least once!

10. Explore the Mausoleum of Augustus near the Spanish Steps in Rome

This impressive monument is situated just a short walk from the Spanish Steps. It was a commissioned space by the Roman Emperor Augustus, who wanted a grand mausoleum to hold both his remains and his name.

The tome is open to the public, but the essence of the mausoleum can be felt even just by wandering the facade.
