Best Restaurants Near the Colosseum in Rome

The Colosseum district is one of the best places for a sit down meal upon arrival in Rome. From most vantage points in the area, the ancient monument can be seen towering overhead, making for a memorable dining experience no matter the time of day.

For the most part, the cuisines near the Colosseum tend to stick to traditional Italian cooking. There are a few exceptions, if you know where to look. Here are some to keep an eye out for.

Aroma in Rome

Lunch with a view of the entire Colosseum? You’re looking for Aroma.

This renowned eatery has one of the most famous terraces that overlooks the entire Colosseum facade. Dining here is one of the city’s proudest 5 star experiences, and one you’ll have to book well in advance to take advantage of.

Make no mistake, dining at Aroma doesn’t come cheap. You’re looking at around €300 per person for a full tasting menu, not including drinks. You do get what you pay for, however, and the service & quality are unmatched. Not to mention that view…

BrewDog Roma in Rome

I love BrewDog, and if you want something more casual after your visit to this historic monument you will too. This is a micro-brewery, one in which a range of Scottish beers are made daily.

It’s a nice change of pace if you’ve had about as much Peroni as you can manage. The beers are offered on tap, and served alongside some great gastropub foods.

Pane & Vino in Rome

If BrewDog weren’t casual enough, let me introduce you to Pane & Vino. This is but a tiny sandwich shop situated in the cluster streets to the east of the Colosseum.

Italians take sandwich making as seriously as they do the rest of their cuisine. Here, you’ll choose between Italian breads and/or Italian burgers. Your meat and vegetable fillings remain your choice.

Although low-key, the sandwiches at Pane & Vino will cost you around €12 each, this is not including any drinks or sides. It’s not cheap, but you’ll be glad it exists in a neighborhood so overrun by tourist traps.

Caffè Propaganda in Rome

Caffè Propaganda could also be seen as unique to this neighborhood. Who would have thought the Colosseum district to be home to a Parisian inspired cafe, with a menu ranging between French delicacies to Italian classics.

It’s an interesting dining experience all round. What’s also wonderful is the operation hours; opening from 8:30am through until 2am the following morning. This is very Parisian of them, and great to know you can eat her virtually any time of day excluding Mondays.

Coming Out in Rome

I spoke too soon. Coming Out actually beats Caffè Propaganda in terms of impressive hours of operation. This spot opens promptly at 7am, seven days a week, and only closes up around 5:30am the following morning. Essentially, they close for just an hour and a half each day.

By night, Coming Out is the most sought after gay bar right next to the Colosseum. By day, this is a family-friendly eatery where you can enjoy breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and late night food as needed.

The spot is a short walk from the main entrance to the Colosseum, and the monument is in full sight if you opt for a table on the street terrace.

Pizzería Luzzi in Rome

If you’re looking for some good old Italian cuisine after your Colosseum visit, head over the Pizzeria Luzzi in one of the nearby side streets from the southernmost exit.

Pizzeria Luzzi does fantastic pizza, but also has a simple pasta menu that is executed to perfection. There are always fresh Italian desserts on offer, as well as €6 house wine that is surprisingly good.

Cafè Cafè in Rome

Cafe Cafe is just a three minute walk from the exit of the Colosseum. It doesn’t offer any impressive views of the monument, but it’s an intimate hideaway for anyone seeing to dine in peace during the chaos of the day.

Note that Cafe Cafe is strictly a daytime dining venue, there is no dinner service available here but the do offer breakfast!

The menu is Italian inspired, with a few cafe classics like pancakes and eggs.

Hostaria da Nerone in Rome

Locals in Rome regard Hostaria da Nerone as the longest standing, most significant dining spot close to the iconic Colosseum.

The restaurant has been here for decades, with almost no changes to the menu or the interior.

It’s good old fashioned Italian dining at its finest. Expect great bubble-crusted pizzas, authentic carbonara and tiramisu made just the way nonna would were you to visit her at home.

Bookings are essential for evening dining, especially on weekends.
