1 Akon

Aliaune Damala Badara Akon Thiam commonly known as Akon is a Senegalese-American singer, entrepreneur and producer. The singer rose to fame in 2004 he released his debut album. He has progressed well in the music industry and he even has five Grammy Award nominations.

The celebrity is also big on philanthropic work. In 2014, he started a project known as Akon Lighting Africa which works towards providing electricity in 15 countries in Africa.  Starting a foundation that uplifts people is such a great thing and that makes him one of the most respected figures on the continent.

2 Sadio Mané

Sadio is a Senegalese footballer and is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time. The player is famed for his skills in dribbling, pressing and speed. Having started his professional career when he was 19, he has steadily grown and is now one of the best players in Africa as he plays for Senegal’s national team as well as the premier league.

Furthermore, the player was named African Footballer of the Year in 2019. This shows that he has a successful career.  Sadio is also keen on community and philanthropic life in that he donated £250,000 to build a school in Bambali, Senegal which is his hometown.

3 Patrice Evra

The former footballer and football coach was born in Dakar Senegal to a diplomat. The family relocated to France where the player started his journey on the field of football. The player started with an Italian club known as Marsala and moved on the next season to join Monza. He later returned to France and played for Nice. The player then joined Juventus in 2014 then proceeded to Marseille. Patrice retired from professional football in 2019after a short contract with West Ham United. Patrice is now a trainee coach at the Manchester United club academy.

4 Khaby Lame

Khaby Lame is a Senegalese-born Italian social media personality. The influencer rose to prominence during the Covid-19 pandemic. He is known for making TikTok videos that silently mock overly complicated life hacks. Furthermore, as of September 2022, he was the most followed person on TikTok.

After being laid off because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the social media personality started making TikTok videos. His appeal came from the fact that he showed a simplified way of doing complicated life hacks without saying a word.

5 Ousmane Sembène

The Senegalese film director is considered to have been the greatest author of Africa and was often referred to as the father of African film. Ousmane taught himself how to read and write and this led to him having a great career as a writer. Ousmane was vocal about the mistreatment of African immigrants as well as the oppression of Spanish and Arab workers. He wanted to show that the issues touching on xenophobia went hand in hand with an individual’s race.  Being concerned with social change made him popular as many reformists agreed with what he was talking about.

6 Patrick Vieira

The football manager was born in Dakar, Senegal. He was also a football player before he retired and was consulting one of the greatest midfielders of his time. During his nine-year tenure in the Premier League, Vieira established himself as a dominant box-to-box midfielder known for his aggressive and highly competitive style of play. This attitude also helped him to distinguish himself as captain of the club from 2002 until his 2002 season.

From 1999 to 2004 he was named the Premier League PFA Team of the Year for six consecutive years. During his time at the club, he helped Arsenal achieve sustained success, winning four FA Cups and three league titles including one which is unbeaten.

7 Demba Ba

The French-born Senegalese football manager was a player before he retired. He is currently the chairman of the National Independent Soccer Association. He made his first-team debut in 2005 with Rouen, France, before moving to Mouscron in 2007 and then Hoffenheim in Germany in 1899. In 2011, he moved to Premier League club West Ham United. He made just 12 appearances for West Ham and despite being the league’s top scorer in the 2010/11 season, he was relegated to the league and Ba moved to Newcastle.

In January 2013 he joined Chelsea for an undisclosed fee and 18 months later he joined Besiktas for €6 million. After a season in Turkey, he moved to the Chinese Super League with Shanghai Shenhua. Born and raised in France, Ba represented Senegal from 2007 to 2015 and represented his country in the 2012 African Cup of Nations, but announced his retirement from football on 13 September 2021.

8 Fatou Samba

Fatou is a member of a girl singing group known as Blackswan. She is the lead dancer, vocalist and main rapper of the group. The group does Kpop and thus are well known among the people who love that particular genre. Fatou was born and raised in Yof, Senegal. In the days before her debut, she modelled for Cineline Entertainment before she decided to become an intern.

She is also a multilingual artist who can speak five languages: English, Korean, French, German and Dutch. On July 8, 2020, Fatou was announced as her fourth member of the upcoming Girls’ group BLACKSWAN. The group debuted on October 16 with the album Goodbye RANIA.

9 Mariama Bà

She is a Senegalese author and feminist. She wrote a book that showed the frustration of African women and how they are treated in society. The writer did not accept the label feminist as she felt that it was loaded with a lot of western values and thus advocated for a kind of womanism.

10 Yassour N’Dour

The Senegalese singer, songwriter, businessman, composer, occasional actor and politician is one of the most notable figures of Senegalese descent. The Rolling Stone magazine described him as ‘perhaps the most famous singer alive’ in a 2004 issue. Having had a successful music career as he developed the popular Senegalese music known as Senegambians, he deserves to be recognised as one of the most famous people from Senegal. He was also the minister for Tourism in the country.
