Terence William Blondie Chaplin is a South African singer and guitarist based in Durban. He was born on 7th July 1951 in South Africa.

Not much is known about Blondie’s mother, but his father was known as Henry Chaplin. Blondie has a brother who is known as Ricky Fataar.

He started his music career as a very young lad with his first band being known as the Flames. The Flames band was a collaboration of Blondie and his brother Ricky.

After touring London where they were performing, the Flames members met with some top artists who joined together and renamed the band The Flame under the Beach Boys label. The career of Blondie went ahead and became a major success even though he became a long-term vocalist of the Rolling Stones band.

1. Blondie鈥檚 Interest in Music was Kindled by Famous Melbourne Musicians

The father of Blondie Chaplain who was his major influence to start his music career used to play the Banjo. At a very tender age, Blondie鈥檚 music interest was kindled by the Melbourne Road Flats musicians.

Clemmy Clarisse was his favourite artist as he showed him how to play the guitar and the music at his place. Adding to this interest, the father of Blondie used to take him to shows which made him love music more.

2. Blondie Dropped Out of School to Pursue Music Career

Blondie Chaplin grew up in a South African neighbourhood that was nurturing the talent of upcoming musicians. He was taken to school, but by the age of 13, he had dropped out of school.

Doing gigs at midnight in big joints contributed more to Blondie dropping out of school. He used to hide under tables when alcohol board officials stormed the joints, and he was spotted a couple of times with his teachers at the joints.

3. Blondie and His Brother were Rock Stars at a Tender Age

Before joining the Beach Boys label, Blondie Chaplin and Ricky were in some rock band. Blondie was aged 13 and Ricky was 9 years old when they became members of a Durban-based rock band The Flames.

At the age of 17 in 1968, their album known as Soulfire was a hit song in South Africa. Then the band鈥檚 cover of 鈥淔or Your Precious Love 鈥 became number one on white radio for 13 weeks.

Later on, as they were on tour in London, Blondie and Ricky joined Wilson and got signed to the Beach Boys label. In a previous interview, Blondie confirmed he was a rock star at a tender age as he stated:

鈥淭he Flame was my third band. So I started like around twelve or thirteen. I just got hooked and I got kind of addicted to it (music).鈥

4. Blondie was Considered Coloured as He Grew Up

Blondie Chaplin grew up in South Africa during the harsh apartheid century. This was the time when there was a system of institutionalised racial oppression that lasted for quite some time.

Blondie was not spared from the discrimination and segregation as a young boy in South Africa. He was brutally classified as a Coloured young boy.

Being Coloured referred to members of multiracial ethnic communities with ancestry from more than one of the various populations in South Africa.

5. Blondie and Co Attracted the Attention of American Artist Carl Wilson who Signed Them

While in the famous band, The Flames, Blondie Chaplin and his colleagues were making hit after hit. They were involved in several world tours attracting the attention of rock lovers.

As Blondie and the band were performing in London, American artist and Beach Boy Carl Wilson heard them. Wilson got interested in The Flames band and signed them to the Beach Boys鈥 record Brother Records label.

Blondie and the team worked on their first album which they named the Flame which featured top artists from The Beach Boys and Badfinger. This is how Blondie Chaplin started hitting and making headlines internationally.

6. Blondie Departed from Beach Boys after Altercation with One of the Artist鈥檚 Brother

Blondie Chaplin enjoyed brilliant success while working with the Beach Boys band. The band was together for more than a decade doing shows and releasing hit albums.

However, Blondie Chaplin decided to leave the Beach Boys while they were on tour. In one of the interviews, Blondie gave the main reason for his untimely departure.

Blondie revealed that he had a serious altercation with the brother of Stephen Love, Mike Love while on a long tour. Blondie never stated what happened but revealed that the incident passed him off.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 need to play with people who use muscle when I鈥檓 just singing,鈥 Blondie stated. It did not last long as Ricky also parted ways with the Beach Boys.

7. Blondie Got a Plaque in Commemoration of The Beach Boys Concert

On 29th September 2017, Blondie Chaplin was given a plaque. Big Noise鈥檚 members Al Gomes and Connie Watrous gave Blondie a plaque from Roger Williams University at The Zeiterion Theatre.

The plaque was presented to commemorate the Beach Boys鈥 September 22nd 1971 concert at The Ramada Inn in Portsmouth. Blondie responded to the sold-out audience by stating: 鈥淚 played a lot in these parts in 1971, and it is nice to be remembered this way.鈥

8. Blondie Reunited with Brian Wilson after 40 Years Apart

After Blondie left the Beach Boys, he started working with different groups. No one knew that Blondie Chaplin would ever work again with Brian Wilson.

Forty years later, Blondie and Brian reunited and released a hit record which was received massively by their fans. The director of Brian Wilson called Blondie and told him to work on a new album.

Blondie never turned the offer down as he joined Brian in the studio to work on the album. They started touring together all over again after 40 years apart.

Blondie began his career at a tender age and worked for so long in the music industry. He is estimated to be earning $100,000 annually.
