Jeffery’s bay is discovered on the beautiful Sunshine Coast of the Eastern Cape, and a short drive from Port Elizabeth it’s  a surfer鈥檚 paradise on the Sunshine Coast.

South Africa鈥檚 premier wave is at Supertubes, a right-hand point break that is intentionally distinguished for its viscosity and distance of the ride.Jeffreys Bay, with its beautiful beaches, has more attractions to offer than just surfing. 

Jeffreys Bay is a surfing mecca of notice and is adequately recognized for its world-renowned beaches and endless summers.Jeffreys Bay is rated one of the top 10 surfing spots in the world, but that鈥檚 not all this beautiful town has to offer.

If all you yearn is to unfurl your towel on the sand then head for Dolphin Beach, a stretch of sand and surf conferred international Blue Flag status 鈥 an eco-grading given to beaches or marinas that meet the outstanding safety and environmental criteria.

With its numerous surf stores and eateries, Jeffreys Bay is yet a tremendous place to solely socialize and indulge in a bit of retail therapy.  One could also get competitive and take part in a multitude of outdoor recreations such as learning to surf, stand-up paddle-boarding, kite surfing, sand boarding, whale and dolphin watching, diving or horse rides on the beach. 

At the Kabeljous Nature Reserve (as you enter J’Bay from the PE side) you can go for a self-guided nature excursion alongside the Kabeljous River estuary or take your mountain bike to the J’Bay bike park, which has 7 trails on offer (you’ll find it between Port Elizabeth and Jeffreys on the R102

For youngsters, the Penguin Centre is close to Cape St Francis and is a distinguished attraction. Near Paradise Beach closer to Jeffreys, you’ll also discover the Happy Hippo Play Farm, which encompasses a sense of farm vibes for kids and is the spot for a typical Saturday market where you can buy food, arts, and crafts. 

Here are some astonishing facts about Jeffreys Bay you might not know.

1. Jeffereys bay is considered  the World鈥檚 Best Surf Spots

Jeffreys Bay is one of the world鈥檚 best surfing and is dwelling to be the best right-hand surf break. Adored for its delightful sandy beaches and legendary waves, it鈥檚 a yard for international surfers and ocean lovers equivalent. The wave season runs from the winter (June to August) but great waves can also be seen as early as April or as late as September.

The premier wave is at Super tubes, a favorite amongst international surfers, and is the venue for the “WCT “World Contest Surfing Tour. The waves can reach an incredible one-to-three meter high, placing them among the top 10 swells anywhere. As the name conveys, the waves are rapid, and getting tubed is what it鈥檚 all about.

Supertubes Guest House is named after the surf break  Other popular surfing spots in J Bay include Tubes near The Point, Albatross, Boneyards, Magnatubes, Kitchen Window, and Main Beach. There is plenty of surf equipment to hire, specialist shops as well as surfing schools in the area.

2. Jeffrey’s bay Oldest Shell Shop

With over 400 shell varieties,  on its extensive coastline, it鈥檚 no amazement that Jeffreys Bay is home to the oldest shell store in South Africa. Established in 1969, The Original Shell Shop was founded by a shell lover who unearthed a huge variety of shells on Jeffreys Bay Beach. The store is known worldwide, and as the ancientest shop in J Bay, it has kept its distinctive identity adding to its charm.

3. Largest Collection of Shells

Jeffreys Bay has an ostensibly limitless supply of shells that are restored after every high tide. The same wave action that formulates the perfect swells for surfing is also liable for the huge diversity of shells on our beaches.

It should thus come as no surprise that Jeffreys Bay Shell Museum spouts the biggest collection of shells in the entire country and captivates shell partisans from all over the world.

Some of the amazing shells harbored here included the cowrie, rare paper nautilus, tiny baby jam tarts, and species of the one. The shell museum is open Monday 鈥 Friday from 10 am to 3 pm and on Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm Closed on public holidays.

4. Named after Captain Jeffreys

This elegant coastal town is named after Captain Jeffreys, who sailed his cargo ship around the East Coast of South Africa in the 1840s. He was compelled to land his ship after a rash of scurvy broke out aboard his vessel.

Jeffrey carved a primitive port on what is now Main Beach, and fabricated the first house in 1850 鈥 a double-story mansion 鈥 that was known as 鈥淭he White House鈥.

5. Jeffrey’s bay is bordered by Nature Reserves

The bustling town of Jeffreys Bay is bordered on both sides by nature reserves and rivers. The Kabeljous Estuary in the Kabeljous Nature Reserve is known as one of the best-preserved estuaries in the Eastern Cape, and every year the flamingos return to spend the summer here.

For nature enthusiasts, there are terrific hiking trails in Kabeljous Nature Reserve as well as in the Noorsekloof Nature Reserve.

6. The Calamari Hub

Jeffreys Bay is the hub of the calamari industry in the Eastern Cape. Flexing, as well as deep sea fishing, is very popular here, and fresh seafood can be enjoyed in profusion in many of the town’s eateries.

7. Blue Flag Beach Status

Jeffreys Bay Dolphin Beach is one of only six beaches in the Eastern Cape to have been rewarded Blue Flag status ahead of the 2019/2020 summer season, ascertaining that J Bay is a destination of international precepts. 

This prestigious award requires the beach to adhere to strict criteria and is scrutinized on various criteria including safety standards, water quality standards, environmental education initiatives, providing environmental information to the general public, the provision of services to bathers, and general environmental management standards.
