Madikizela-Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician, and the second wife of Nelson Mandela. The couple married in 1958 and had two daughters, Zenani and Zindziwa. Later on, the couple separated in 1992. They finalized their divorce in March 1996 with an unspecified out-of-court settlement.

She served as a Member of Parliament from 1994 to 2003, and from 2009 until her death. She was also a deputy minister of arts and culture from 1994 to 1996. A member of the African National Congress (ANC) political party, she served on the ANC’s National Executive Committee and headed its Women’s League. Madikizela-Mandela was known to her supporters as the “Mother of the Nation”.

She was born on 26 September 1936 and later on she died on 2 April 2018 after she from diabetes. She was known to her supporters as the “Mother of the Nation”.

She held a number of jobs in various parts of what was then  the Bantustan of Transkei, which included the Transkei government .Her first job was a social worker at Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto.

1. She was detained for 18 Months

1n 1969, in the midst of Nelson Mandela serving his 27 years in prison, Madikizela-Mandela was also detained. She was held in solitary confinement for 18 months where she was tortured and constantly questioned. Friends and family had to take care of her two young daughters during this time. Madikizela-Mandela was held under the Terrorism Act of 1967 and the Suppression of Communism Act of 1950.

2.She was convicted of kidnapping Stompie Moeketsi

Madikizela-Mandela was convicted of kidnapping and being an accessory to the assault of youth activist Stompie Moeketsi in 1991. She blamed for the killing of activist Stompie Seipei, who was found near her Soweto home with his throat cut, she was convicted in 1991 for kidnapping and assaulting the 14-year-old because he was suspected of being an informer. She was sentenced to six years in prison, but on appeal, her sentence was reduced to a fine and a two-year suspended sentence.

Even though she was a suspect in the murder of Stompie Seipei, his mother told the media in April 2018 that she did not believe that Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was involved in her son’s murder.

3.She was fired by Nelson Mandela

She and Mandela separated in 1992 and her reputation slipped further when he sacked her from his cabinet in 1995 after allegations of corruption. Mandela was attempting to offer a transparent government and was actively rooting out corruption but Madikizela-Mandela had already been convicted of kidnapping by this point and was openly critical of her estranged husband鈥檚 administration. She even defied travel restrictions by taking an unauthorized trip to Ghana.

4.She used direct leadership style

 She was known for her direct leadership style, Madikizela-Mandela鈥 critiques often accused her of encouraging and inciting violence. One particular quote drew ire from many sides. 鈥淭ogether, hand in hand, with our matches and our necklaces, we shall liberate this country,鈥 she said. Putting a 鈥渘ecklace鈥 on someone was the act of putting a tire doused in gasoline around an opponent’s neck and setting it ablaze.  It was a gruesome act utilized by some of the more radical members of the ANC.

5.She did not inherit Mandela鈥檚 wealth

When Mandela passed away in 2013 at 95-years of age, none of his 4.5 million fortune went to Madikizela-Mandela. The civil rights activist did not include his ex-wife in his will though he did set aside money for his children, grandchildren, staff, and his third wife. While Mandela and Madikizela-Mandela were married for 38 years, Mandela was in prison for 27 of them.

6.She was convicted of theft and fraud

On 24 April 2003, Madikizela-Mandela was convicted on 43 counts of fraud and 25 of theft, and her broker, Addy Moolman, was convicted on 58 counts of fraud and 25 of theft. Both had pleaded not guilty. The charges related to money taken from loan applicants’ accounts for a funeral fund, but from which the applicants did not benefit. Madikizela-Mandela was sentenced to five years in prison. Later on in July 2004 an appeal of a judge of Pretoria High court ruled that the crimes were not committed for personal gain thus the judge overturned the conviction for the theft and upheld the one for fraud, hence suspended her 3years and 6 month sentence.

7.She resigned from all her leadership position

After Madikizela-Mandela was convicted for theft and fraud, she ended up resigning from all her leadership positions in the Anc and also her parliamentary seat and the presidency of the ANC Women鈥檚 League. And later she returned to politics.

8.She offered to act as a human shield

Prior to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Madikizela-Mandela offered to act as a human shield. The invasion of Iraq was the first stage of the Iraq War. The invasion phase began on 19 March 2003 (air) and 20 March 2003 (ground) and lasted just over one month. She  also helped to defuse a hostage situation at Wits University, where a student who was in arrears with fees took a staff member hostage at knifepoint.

9.She had a great love for gardening: 

Her daughter Zindziwa shared some personal qualities and characteristics of her mother that not many people  know about while they were having dinner to celebrate Madikizela-Mandela鈥檚 80th birthday. Zindziwa said Winnie loved shopping, hoarding, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela died at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg on 2 April 2018 at the age of 81. She suffered from diabetes and had recently undergone several major surgeries. She “had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year”. Her death was announced by her personal assistant Zodwa Swane.
