1. The bar was started as a bad Joke

While Ronnies Shop has sex in its name, it offers a different kind of service altogether. The establishment was originally set up as a farm stall, which failed. The owner, Ronnie, not to be defeated opted to open a braai /bar instead with the hope of turning his fortunes.

The place turnaround happened when a friend vandalized the name of the bar and added sex next to his sign and the name Ronnies Sex Shop was born from Ronnies Shop.

2. Ronnie’s sex shop is not your usual bar

Whereas most business owners in the food and beverage industry are ingenious to attract customers, Ronnie’s Sex Shop has more than just your usual drinks and food. Part of its decoration and main attraction includes bras, women’s underwear- of different shapes and sizes, that hangs from the ceiling, and t-shirts on sale.

All the accessories of bras and underwear have signatures on them donated by the naughty and adventurous Female friends of Ronnie’s Sex shop as decoration. In addition to the interesting collection of undergarments, strewn across the pub are teddy bears, baby dolls, and clown wigs.

3. Ronnie’s sex shop has been operational for four decades and is still open

During the Covid 19 pandemic that hit South Africa hard, the sex shop almost closed. Ronnie Price the owner crowdfunded, to keep the place open and from going under and shutting down.  Having the title of the oddest bar in South Africa is no easy fete. The owner Frank Ronald ‘Ronnie’ Price runs the bar, whose white wall is covered with graffiti telling intimate and personal sex stories of its visitors.

“I had sex here” boasts one reveler’s writing on one of the benches.

4. “Sex” Watering Hole and Roadkill restaurant

Ronnie’s Sex Shop offers a watering hole spot in the middle of nowhere. It is an ideal stop place for international and odd thirsty locals, day trippers, motorcyclists, truck drivers, and adventurous odd folks who needs an ice cold brewski as well as pub lunch.

The bar has a cafe, Roadkill, which supplies the merrymakers with a hearty, greasy and sumptuous meal as well as accommodations for those who have had one too many or are not in a hurry to anywhere.

5. Donations kept Ronnies sex shop open for business

Where many businesses opted to provide newer ways of service rendering and many others closed, Ronnies Sex Shop was saved by its die-hard frequenters and one-time customers. The total amount garnered during the charity was R43 993.99 which kept the place open. And most of the customers always had something positive to say about the place.

For instance, Grazia donated R50.00 and added the message “Keep the doors open!”

While most of the tourists stop for ice cold beer, The shop boasts milkshakes, a shop to buy a T-shirt with a message, great hand-cut fries as well as an awesome vibe of great conversation and memory making and cataloging on the whole establishment. You can write any message or your name anywhere or leave your sweaty mark on its ceiling.

7. A gem within mountains

Ronnies Sex Shop is situated far from Cape Town on Route 62, a less known and traveled highway.  The route is one of the quietest traveled mostly by bikers, hippies, funky hoteliers, and artisan brewers.  The area boasts of paprika-colored gravel roads and vast open spaces with looming mountains outlining the horizon.

Ronnie’s Sex Shop is situated in Kannaland just 20 Km outside of Barrydale on Route 62. It is open from 8 am to 11 pm every other day of the week.

8. Writing tradition on the walls

Just as the idea by a friend to add a three lettered word “Sex” on the wall adjacent to the name Ronnie’s Shop lead to the inception of the bar, Ronnie’s Sex Shop, the business has kept the tradition alive.

The walls boast of love messages from lovers, dates when lovers visited the place, confessions of sex, longing messages, and wishes. The white walls offer a ready place to scribble a message while drunk, that is if you can manage to find a space with the ink-covered wall.

9. A melting Pot of Cultures

On a busy day, the bar boasts of more than 250 revelers and randy tourists adventurous to visit ‘sex shop’. While most of them come from South Africa, most are tourists from Germany, the United States, Britain, and different countries in Africa.

 10. Even the rich Know Ronnie’s Sex Shop

While the shop boasts of privacy due to its locale in the desert and far from the city, it also boasts a life of adventure. During the day, it is not surprising to see four or so helicopters landing and their passengers heading to the Sex Shop for a quick bite and drink; or a photo shoot of its infamous assorted accessories of panties and bras.
