Shaun Morgan Welgemoed is a South African musician, singer, songwriter and guitarist for the rock band Seether. He was born on 21^st December 1978 in South Africa.

Shaun’s parents divorced when he was still a young child. He had two siblings, Eugene who committed suicide in 2007 and a sister, Lucy.

Shaun studied at Merchiston Preparatory School and later on, joined Maritzburg College in Pietermaritzburg. He became a front-row rugby player for his group鈥檚 top team in the first three years of high school.

Shaun got a back injury while playing in his third year which made him stop playing rugby. The injury made him lose interest in rugby and developed his passion for playing the guitar.

At the age of fourteen, Shaun discovered the Seattle grunge movement. This made him get inspired to become a musician.

As he continued with his career, Shaun has been engaging in various genres of music. He plays post-grunge, alternative metal, hard rock and nu-metal.

4. Shaun Began his Career in a Band of 3 after One Singer Never Turned Up for Practice

Beginning his career, Shaun Morgan was a member of a tribute band. Their main work was on covering songs by musicians such as Creed and Tom Petty.

In May 1999, Shaun Morgan created the Saron Gas band. This band was originally made up of four musicians.

However, during their first practice, one of the singers, a guitarist and a vocalist never showed up. The band decided to go as a three-piece.

Shaun became the lead vocalist and guitarist of the Saron Gas band. The band enjoyed moderate success which made the bass player quit in January 2000.

Shaun decided to get in touch with Dale Stewart who was a good bass player he knew. They, later on, released an album known as Fragile later in 2000.

After failing to hit more in South Africa and make a brand for them, Shaun and his band decided to relocate to the United States. In January 2000, Shaun and his band decided to relocate.

In the United States, Shaun signed with Wind-up Records. The original drummer of Shaun鈥檚 band decided to return home to South Africa leaving them as two.

Shaun decided to change their name while under Wind-up Records and settled for the name Seether. While in the United States, the fans found it hard to pronounce the name 鈥淲elgemoed鈥�. He decided to start using his middle name Morgan professionally.

The bands include Nirvana, Portishead, Silverchair, The Beatles, Metallica, Stone Temple Pilots, Nine Inch Nails, Mad Season, Rage Against the Machine, Black Sabbath, Korn, Soundgarden, Led Zeppelin, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Deftones.

7. Shaun became an Addict to Alcohol and Drugs Ending in Rehab

After several heartbreaks, while living in the United States, Shaun decided to seek a way to do away with the isolation. He decided to turn to alcohol and other drugs.

Shaun revealed that allowed him to feel more comfortable in social situations. In 2006, Shaun ended up in rehab after his situation started becoming worse.

8. Shaun’s Brother Committed Suicide which Affected His Tour

On 13^th August 2007, Shaun Morgan lost his brother who committed suicide. Eugene jumped to his death from the eighth-floor window of the Radisson Hotel in Rapid City, South Dakota.

This incident took place shortly after midnight. The death of Eugene affected Shaun a lot while he was on tour with Seether.

Shaun was unable to find support to talk about his brother鈥檚 death. The suppression of these feelings was intense making Shaun Morgan abuse prescription medication.

9. Shaun Married his Long-time Partner after Leaving his Girlfriend

Shaun Morgan dated Evanescence singer Amy Lee. They were together from 2003 to 2005.

However, the two broke up making Shaun get into depression and indulge in alcoholism leaving him to seek rehabilitation. In May 2021, Shaun got married to his long-time partner Jordan Kirby. The two have a daughter together.
