Barcas Plaza Espana is a plaza in the Maria Luisa Park in Seville, Spain. It is an example of Regionalism Architecture, mixing elements of the Baroque Revival, Renaissance Revival and Moorish Revival styles of Spanish architecture.

It is the largest building of all those built in the city during the 20th century and was the final result of several projects that took place during the gestation of the Ibero-American Exhibition.

1. It Was Designed by Anibal Gonzalez

Barcas Plaza Espana was built between 1914 and 1929 as one of the main constructions for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. In 1914 the first stone was laid by King Alfonso XII and the excavation and earthwork began.

Gonzalez incorporated a mix of 1920s Art Deco, Spanish Renaissance Revival, Spanish Baroque Revival, and Neo-Mudejar styles. In 1929 the Ibero-American Exhibition took place at the square in the presence of the country鈥檚 highest authorities.

The square is a huge half-circle; the buildings in the square are accessible by four bridges over the moat, representing the ancient kingdoms. In the centre is the Vicente Travel fountain.

2. Barcas Plaza Espana is Inside Maria Luisa Park

The square is a plaza in the edge of Maria Luisa Park (Parque de Maria Luisa). The park was designed by Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier. The park’s southern end was redeveloped into an expanse of gardens and grand boulevards.

The centre of its pauraque de Maria Luisa was designed in a Moorish paradisical style with a half mile of pavilions, tiled fountains, benches, walls, stylized flower beds, ponds and lush paintings of palms.

3. The Square Underwent Restoration From 2007 to 2010

The Seville City Council invested 9 million euros in restoring the Barca Plaza Espana. The main objective of the restoration was to recover the original monument as the architect Anibal Gonzalez had designed it.

The restoration team recovered many pieces, such as ceramic streetlights, pavements, and benches. They created reproduction elements based on photographs and postcards from the municipal newspaper library.

The ceramic pieces are placed on the exterior railings and replacement cats-iron lanterns decorate the interior. The estuary remained dry throughout the restoration and the rental boats returned to it.

Cefoarte and Diaz Cubero were some of the experts who worked in multidisciplinary teams to restore the complex to lively use. 

In 2011, a bronze statue of the architect Anibal Gonzalez was placed in front of the square with a granite base and a ramp creating the Anibal Gonzalez roundabout.

4. There is the Magic Fountain of Montjuic

The Magic Fountain of Montjuic is one of the most amazing spectacles to experience in Barcelona and it’s free. It was designed for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition.

5. The Barcas Plaza Espana is Now Used as Office for Government Agencies

After the exhibition ended, it was part of the University of Seville, hence the existing niches in each province.

Instead, it became the seat of the military government, its rooms serving as the location of the Captaincy General. It later housed a delegation of the central government on Andalusia and the same time, the military museum of Seville.

Today it has been renovated and adapted for use as offices for government agencies. The central government departments, with a sensitive adaptive redesign, are located within it.

6. The Square has Many Alcoves

Barcas Plaza Espana has many tiled alcoves which were built around the plaza. Each represents a different province of Spain. The plaza鈥檚 tiled alcoves of the provinces are frequent backdrops for visitors鈥� portrait photographs taken in their own home province.

A pair of covered bookshelves bound each plaza鈥檚 alcove. Now they are used by visitors in the manner of a 鈥淟ittle Free Library鈥�. Each of the bookshelves contains works with information about their province. Some visitors have also donated favourite novels and other books for others to read.

7. During its Construction, the Building Received Controversy

During its construction, some aspects of the project aroused some controversy. The Academy of Fine Arts opposed the planned height of the two towers that could rival Giralda.

The French architect Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier who collaborated on the design of the Maria Luisa Park, rejected its construction. He would laugh because Seville is a city with a shortage of water.

8. Barca Plaza Espana Has Been Featured in Several Television and Films

The square has been used as a setting in several varied films. The European Film Academy has chosen it as a Treasure of European Film Culture, a distinction that it awards to spaces and film locations of a symbolic nature of great historical value for cinema.

Plaza Espana was used as a filming location for scenes for Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and The Wind and the Lion (1975) and Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002). In 2012 it was also featured in The Dictator and used as a set for the video of Simply Red鈥檚 song; Something Got Me Started.

9. The Square has 48 Benches

On the walls of the square, there is a series of 48 benches that represent, in alphabetical order, forty-six peninsular Spanish provinces except for Seville and two archipelagos (the Balearic Islands and Canary). There is a coat of arms, a map and a cloth of Pisan tile with outstanding historical facts about that territory.

The benches are divided into four sections and at the beginning and end of each one, there is a tile cloth related to the province of Seville. The benches also have two small towers on the sides with shelves that have been used occasionally to place books.

10. Barcas Plaza Espana Has Nearby Attraction Sites

After exploring the amazing Plaza Espana, you can also visit nearby attractions. One is the Barcelona Olympic park which features the venue and structure where the 1992 Olympic Games were held.
