Seville Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Seville, Andalusia, Spain. It is about 494 years old since its establishment.  The construction of the cathedral was a long and laborious process and was not completed until 1507, some 106 years after the cathedral’s plans were first drawn up.it was built with the intentions of not only as a display of the prestige and wealth Seville had accrued by the time of its completion in 1507, but also of the triumph of Christianity over the vanquished Moorish kings.

Here are some of the facts about Seville Cathedral;

1.It is the 4th largest cathedrals in the world

Seville Cathedral is an immense building. It has a total length of 135 meters (443 feet), a width of 76 meters (249 feet), and a maximum height in the transept of 42 meters (138 feet). It is therefore regarded as the 4th largest cathedral and the largest gothic church in the world.

After its completion in the 16th century, the Seville Cathedral became the largest church in the world, surpassing the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

2. The original building was built by the Muslims

Seville Cathedral is  the original building on the site that was built by the Muslims in the 12th century. Caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf ordered the construction of a large mosque in Seville in the year 1178.

An earlier mosque that was built around the year 830 was replaced by an enormous new structure. Shortly after Seville’s conquest by Ferdinand III, Yaqub Yusuf’s mosque was converted into the city’s cathedral.

3.The builders preserved some of the elements from the ancient mosque

The鈥 Sahn鈥 which is the oil courtyard of the mosque is still present in the cathedral compound. This courtyard is now referred to as the 鈥淧atio de Los Naranjos鈥 and consists of a large number of orange trees and a fountain.

4.It is a World Heritage Site

The cathedral was registered in 1987 as a world Heritage Site by UNESCO along with the adjoining Alc谩zar palace complex and the General Archive of the Indies. The tower鈥檚 height  is 104.5 m  and was one of the most important symbols in the medieval city. Construction began in 1184 under the direction of architect Ben Ahmad Baso. According to the chronicler Ibn Sahib al-Salah, the works were completed on 10 March 1198, with the placement of four gilt bronze balls in the top section of the tower. The statue on its top, called “El Giraldillo”, was installed in 1568 to represent the triumph of the Christian faith.

5. It was the site of the baptism of Infante Juan of Aragon

The only son of the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castle was baptized at the Seville Cathedral in 1478. At the time, his parents were involved in the War of Castilian Succession against Isabella’s niece Juana la Beltraneja, wife of King Afonso V of Portugal.

The War of the Castilian Succession was the military conflict that was  contested from 1475 to 1479 for the succession of the Crown of Castile . It was a fight between the supporters of Joanna ‘la Beltraneja’, reputed daughter of the late monarch Henry IV of Castile, and those of Henry’s half-sister, Isabella, who was ultimately successful.

6. It holds the remains of the City’s Conqueror

The royal chapel holds the remains of Ferdinand III Of Castle since he was the city鈥檚 conqueror. It also holds the remains of his son and heir Alfonso the Wise and their descendant, King Peter the Just.

 Ferdinand III of Castle was  the King of Castile from 1217 and King of Le贸n from 1230 as well as King of Galicia from 1231.He was the son of Alfonso IX of Le贸n and Berenguela of Castile. He was one of the most successful kings of Castile, by securing not only the permanent union of the crowns of Castile and Le贸n, but also masterminding the most expensive southward territorial expansion campaign.

7. The Archbishop’s Palace is located on the northern side of the cathedral

The Archbishop’s Palace  is a palace in Seville, Spain. It has served as the residence of bishops and archbishops of the episcopal sees and numerous nobleman and military figures to the present time. It is located in the southern section of Seville, on the northeastern side of Seville Cathedral in the neighborhood of Santa Cruz.  It has been declared  a National Monument since 1969.

8. There are funerary monuments for the cardinals

Inside the Seville cathedral  there is a funerary monument claiming to hold the remains of; Juan de Cervantes and Pedro Gonz谩lez de Mendoza are located among its chapels. Christopher Columbus and his son Diego are also buried in the cathedral. His tomb was taken from Seville to Santo Domingo cathedral in 1544, and allegedly  returned over three centuries later. 

9.It was a Christianized Mosque

After Seville’s conquest by Ferdinand III, Yaqub Yusuf’s mosque was converted into the city’s cathedral. Its orientation was changed and its spaces partitioned and adorned to suit Christian worship practices. The internal space was gradually divided into chapels by constructing walls in the bays along the northern and southern walls. Almost the entire eastern half of the cathedral was occupied by the royal chapel that would hold the bodies of Ferdinand, his wife and Alfonso the Wise.

 The cathedral has 80 chapels, including the Capilla Real which was reported in 1896 that about  500 masses were conducted daily in the chapels.

10.It is among twelve treasures in Spain

On September 2007 after the international competition of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Antena 3 and Onda Cero launched a campaign to the twelve Treasures of Spain. The initiative was based on the votes of the people , which was conducted through internet and mobile. There were about 9,000 applications which were later whittled down to 20 candidates. Out of the 20 candidates , at  first they were to choose 7 Treasures of Spain, but later that figure was changed to 12, where the Seville Cathedral was among the winners.
