In 2016, Ferran was awarded a senior debut for Valencia’s reserve team while still a junior. In the 2017/18 season, his hard work was noticed and he was officially promoted to Valencia’s B-side.

He scored his first senior goal for the B-team on August 26th, 2018 in a 4-1 home win over Peralada-Girona B. His performances had seen him get attention from Spanish giants at this point. However, he opted to renew his contract with Valencia on 5th October 2018.

The contract renewal, while coming with a salary boost, increased his release clause to €25 million. He made his debut on 30th November 2018 in a 4-1 home Copa del Rey win against Real Zaragoza. On 16th December 2018, he made his La Liga debut coming on for the last 9 minutes in a 2-1 loss away to Eibar. The cameo made Ferran the first player born in the 2000s to play in La Liga.

After making his La Liga debut, Torres was officially promoted to Valencia’s senior team on 1st January 2019. What a way to start your year and what a year it turned out to be for Torres.

On 19th January, that same month, he scored his first La Liga goal against RC Celta Vigo. This made him the second player born in the 2000s to score in the competition after Real Madrid’s Brazilian winger Vinicius Jr.

He was on the bench for Valencia’s triumph over Barcelona in the Copa del Rey on 25th May 2019. He scored his first champions league goal on November 5th, 2019 against Lille. In doing so he became Valencia’s youngest scorer in the competition.

He became the youngest player to play 50 league (La Liga) games for Valencia on 23rd November. He was 19 years and 254 days old breaking a 38-year-old record previously held by Miguel Tendillo who set it at 19 years 351 days.

5. Signed for The Citizens in August 2020

Torres’s exploits on the field and incredible form had attracted attention from Europe’s top leagues. On August 4th, 2020, Manchester City (The Citizens), announced the signing of Ferran Torres from Valencia.

He had signed a 5-year contract for a transfer fee of €23 million (£20.8 million). Upon signing, he inherited shirt number 21 from City legend David Silva. Pretty big shoes to fill but considering the depth in City’s squad when he signed, there wasn’t much pressure put on his shoulders.

He made his debut on City’s 2020/21 season opener against Wolves as a substitute. On 30th September, he scores his first goal for the citizens in a 3-0 away EFL Cup win against Burnley.

Torres had an amazing first season at Manchester City. He scored in his first 3 European games for his club. In doing so he became the youngest Spanish player ever to score in three consecutive UCL games, at 20 years and 241 days old.

This impressive season culminated in a Premier League title win with Manchester City. The third consecutive league title win for the club at the time. The Citizens also won the EFL Cup in the 2020/21 season.

7. Left for Barcelona at End Of 2021

After what many would consider an above-average first season, many expected this to be the beginning of Torres’s stint at City. However, he unexpectedly fell out of favor in his second season. This was mainly due to injuries but even when fit, Torres rarely played.

This prompted him to consider a move from City. In December of 2021, Barcelona came calling for Torres and as recent transfers have shown, it’s hard to say no to Barcelona. On 28th December 2021, Barcelona and Manchester City announced that they had reached an agreement for the €55 million (plus conditional add-ons worth €10 million) transfer of Ferran.

8. One (1) Billion Release Cause

What was more surprising than the move itself was the release clause set by Barcelona for Ferran Torres. According to Spanish FA regulations, a release clause must be inserted in every player’s contract in the Spanish leagues.

Due to this, La Liga Clubs usually set high release Clauses to avoid losing players at a cheap. In 2017 however, the footballing world was rocked when PSG triggered Neymar’s €222m release clause.

This shocked but also rattled Barcelona. Since then, they seem to set exceedingly high release clauses to avoid a repeat of the Neymar situation. After signing for Barcelona, Ferran’s contract includes a €1 billion release clause. Players such as Gave, Pedri, and Ansu Fati also have the same release clause.

9. Falling Out of Favor Under Xavi?

Ferran officially joined Barcelona in January 2022. The La Liga season was at its midpoint and Torres played a crucial role in Barcelona’s second half of the season.

He was a regular, for the team scoring 5 goals and assisting 4 in all competitions Barcelona was active in. However, prior to the start of the 2022/23 season, Barcelona signed Lewandowski and Raphinha from Bayern and Leeds respectively.

This coupled with Ousmane’s Dembele’s rediscovered form has seen Ferran play less and less. However, he seems to laugh off any rumors of a move from the Catalan side.

10. Headed to Qatar 2022

If you’ve been following the past 3 or 4 World Cup winners, you might be familiar with the term ‘the curse of Champions’. Spain won the 2010 World Cup and since then they have found it very difficult on any big international stage.

However, they will look to put this so-called ‘curse’ behind them. Under the coaching of Luis Enrique, former Barcelona coach, Torres is part of Spain’s 26-man squad. He has been Enrique’s most preferred striker for the national team and therefore chances are he will be starting.
