Mijas is a town in Malaga province in the Andalusia community. It is located on the southern coast of Spain; Mijas belongs to the region of Costa del Sol Occidental.

Mijas’s economy is primarily based on tourism featuring local historical museums and many souvenir shops. Mijas also engages in agricultural activities, and some agricultural products include potatoes, avocados and cereals.

The municipality has seven golf courses, including La Cala Resort, the biggest golf resort in Spain.

1. Mijas was Established in Prehistoric Times

Mijas was established during prehistoric times by the Tartessians, remains of the original defensive wall are still visible on parts of the exterior wall of the city. As described in Claudius Ptolemy, the area’s mineral wealth attracted ancient Greeks and Phoenicians.

The Romans maintained lively commerce with Mijas and were later replaced with the Visigoth’s rule after 714D; Visigoths triumphed over the Moors. The Moors authorized the village inhabitants to preserve their property, religion and customs in exchange for a third of their goods from agriculture, farming and livestock.

In 1487, Mijas opposed the attacks of the Catholic monarchs during the siege of Malaga. After Malaga fell, inhabitants gave in and most were traded as enslaved people. During the Revolt of the Comuneros, a few decades later, Mijas remained loyal to the Spanish crown, which granted it the title Muy Leal (very cold).

During prehistoric times and the 19th century, Mijas agonized from intense pirate operations along the coast. This pirate undertaking motivated the construction of the watchtowers that still stand today.

2. Mijas Enjoys Semi-Tropical Temperatures

Due to Mijas’s proximity to the sea, it enjoys semi-tropical temperatures, with winter days being mostly warm/hot. From May to November, it experiences hot/very hot weather.

The months of July and August are very hot, with temperatures at the end of July and early August hollowing around 30C. Winter nights can sometimes be chilly but with only an occasional light frost.

 Rainfall occurs mainly between October and April and is below 600 millimeters yearly. The town of Mijas experiences 2,920 hours of sunshine per year. The climate of Mijas changes gradually with increasing elevation in the mountains.

3. A Historic Event Happened in 1831

On December 2, 1831, general Torrijos landed the beach El Charcon with 52 men. They navigated Mijas, climbed the hill to the top and took refuge at a house on Alqueria in Alhaurin de la Torre on Molinas County property.

They were surrounded by troops sent by the governor Gonzales Moreno. Torrijos and his companions were shot on the San Andres beaches on December 11, 1831.

4. Mijas has Charming Seaside Village of La Cala de Mijas

If you are looking for a good Spanish seaside village, La Cala de Mijas is the place. It is the central point of Mijas and used to be a fishing village.

The village is full of cafes, beach bars and family-run shops. There is a street market in El Baratillo where traders sell fruits, knickknacks and many other items.

In 2015, an admired coastal boardwalk was opened and had become popular with tourists. La Cala de Mijas is teeming with life and activities mostly during summers.

Visitors can fancy a whole week of festivities from July 25 as villagers showcase local delicacies as well as music and dance. Locals celebrate Noches de Luna y Playa from July to August, where the promenade becomes the venue for live classical music performances and flamenco dancing.

5. Mijas has Quirky Museums: The Museo de Minaturas and The Contemporary Art Centre

Mijas also has many museums that showcase its unique arts. Museo de Minaturas is a delight, unlike any other museum housed in Carromato de Max (Max Caravan).

The museum has a variety of eccentricities, such as a shrunken head and a copy of Leonardo Da Vinci’s. The Caravan contains around 360 exhibits for visitors to marvel at.

The Contemporary Art Museum was established in 2014. It contains around 550 works of art, including those of the locals and showcases works of Dali and Picasso. The museum also hosts art workshops.

6. Mijas is Full of Free Hiking Places

Mijas is a wonder of nature, with plenty of hiking trails and hidden natural gems to be discovered by the avid nature lover. Visitors can do hiking themselves without spending on a guided tour.

The local government of Mijas has produced a comprehensive hiking guide that visitors can get at the tourist office and online.

While taking a solo hike, observing safety measures and precautions is good. You are supposed to wear the appropriate attire and bring the necessities.

You can take nature walks at Mountain Country Walk and Mijas Area Country Walk, which take visitors through various places in Mijas and surrounding areas.

7. Mijas Offers Aquatic Life Experience

You can explore Mediterranean marine life in the surrounding areas of Mijas. A British-run scuba diving company offers scuba diving courses for people of all skill levels and a program for disabled divers.

There is also a walk-through underwater park in the Sea Life Center in Benalmadena port, which contains a vast array of marine life. It also has a center where injured sea creatures are nursed.

8. Explore Mijas Pueblo

Mijas Pueblo is one of Malaga’s most popular white villages, with good reason. The picturesque village sits midways up the Mijas mountain, which blesses it with astounding views of the countryside leading down to the beaches of Fuengirola and Mijas Costa.

Mijas Pueblo is full of life and live concerts and busy market stalls are frequent. Don’t miss to visit Chocolate Factory and learn how to make Mijas’ traditional chocolate.

Walk along the viewpoint of the village through the park and turn back through the narrow street nestled between whitewashed houses decorated with colorful pot plants.

9. Mijas has a Good Education System

The areas of Fuengirola and Mijas have a good state education system, as does all of the Costa del Sol. There are plenty of private fee-paying International colleges for all ages within easy reach.

One of the international private fee-paying colleges is St Anthony’s College Mijas.

10. Mijas has Fantastic Chill Out Places

Once you are done adventuring, you can go to Plaza Mayor to relax. Plaza Mayor is a leisure park and shopping center located near the Malaga Airport and is filled with restaurants and shops.

Plaza Mayor is also a cinema and amusement center with various amenities. It is the best place to hang out after the day’s activities.
