Garbo was ranked fifth on the list of the American Film Institute as the greatest female star of classic Hollywood cinema in 1999.

1. Speculations from biographers claimed she was bisexual

Since it was believed that Garbo had intimate relationships with women as she did men, recent biographers and others speculated her being bisexual, having intimate relationships with both genders.

She was classified as predominantly lesbian. In 1927, stage and screen actress Lilyan Tashman was introduced to Garbo who, according to some writers, had an affair with her.

Louise Brooks also stated that she had a brief liaison with Garbo the following year

Garbo was born in S枚dermalm, Stockholm. She was born third and youngest to Anna Lovisa and Karl Alfred Gustafsson.

Her mother worked in a jam factory while her father casually worked as a street cleaner, grocer, factory worker, and butcher鈥檚 assistant.

The family was impoverished and lived in a three-bedroom cold-water flat, in a district regarded to as the city鈥檚 slum.

According to Garbo, it was eternally grey-those long winter鈥檚 nights.

3. She was the star of the late silent era and the Golden Age of Hollywood

Garbo was a star of the late silent film era she had wonderful performances which mesmerized the audience watching.

Especially her outstanding performances with her co-actor John Gilbert.

She starred in three of them with Gilbert as the leading man. She was truly a sensation.

Once the time had reached for her to transition to sound, Greta Garbo鈥檚 last silent film was The Kiss Made in 1929, studios feared that her Swedish accent might impair her work in sound.

Despite the studio鈥檚 fears, Great Garbo became one of the biggest box-office draws of the next decade.   

 4. Garbo is rumored to have been depressed after retirement

After her retirement, Garbo was rumored to have been depressed.

How to spend her time was perplexing to her she was always struggling with her many eccentricities and her life was full of melancholy and moodiness.

She told her frequent walking companion as she was approaching her sixties that she was awaiting a few days for an anniversary of sorrow that never leaves her and that it would never leave her for the rest of her life.

She also told another one of her friends in 1971 that she supposed she suffered from very deep depression.

A biographer claims that Garbo has been bipolar, happy one moment and the next there is nothing left for her.

5. She survived breast cancer

Breast cancer develops from the breast tissue, signs may include a lump in the breast or a change in the breast shape among others.

Greta Garbo was successfully treated for breast cancer in 1984.

This was towards the end of her life, only her closest friends knew of her six-hour dialysis treatments three times a week at the Rogosin Institute in New York Hospital

6. In 1983, she was made a Commander of the Swedish Order of the Polar Star

The Order of the Polar Star is a Swedish order of chivalry created by King Fredrick 1 on 23 February 1748.

The order until 1975, was intended to reward Swedish and foreign for 鈥渃ivic merits, devotion to duty, science, literary, for learned and useful works and new and beneficial institutions.

In November 1983, Greta Garbo was given such an honor by being made a commander of the Swedish Order of the Polar Star by the order of king Carl XVI Gustaf, of Sweden.

7. She died at the age of 84

Greta Garbo died on 15th April 1990 at the age of 84 in a hospital. Her death was caused as a result of pneumonia and renal failure.

Later it was claimed by Daum that she also suffered from gastrointestinal.

It refers to diseases involving the gastrointestinal tract like the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine among other organs, and periodontal ailments.

These refer to diseases involving the teeth that result in attachment loss and destruction of alveolar bone, towards the end of her life

8. She shunned any form of media attention

She shunned any form of media attention because she was suspicious and mistrustful of the media and she was often at odds with MGM executives.

She was referred to as the 鈥淪wedish Sphinx鈥. She was reticent and had fear of strangers, this had perpetuated the mystery and mystique projected both on screen and in real life by her.

Despite her strenuous efforts to avoid publicity, she became one of the most publicized women of the twentieth century.

She wanted nothing more than to be alone. She never signed autographs or answered fan mail, rarely did interviews nor did she go to Oskar ceremonies not even if she was nominated.

9. She was awarded the lllis quorum

The lllis award was introduced by king Gustav III IN 1784.

The award was first awarded by the king of Sweden and now the award is given by the Government and is currently the highest award that can be given to a citizen in Sweden.

It is awarded to at least seven people per year Greta Garbo was given the lllis award by the government of Sweden in 1985. Also in the same year, she had a star nicknamed after her because of her contributions to the cinema.

10. She was once designated the most beautiful woman who ever lived by the Guinness Book of World Records

The Guinness World Record is known from its inception in 1955 until 1999.

It is a reference book published annually known as The Guinness Book of World Records, it lists world records of human achievements and the extremes of the natural world.

The book was co-founded by brothers, Norris and Ross McWhirter in Fleet-street, in August 1955.
