The Sherlock Holmes Museum is a privately run museum in London England it is majorly dedicated to the famous detective Sherlock Holmes.

However, it is the world’s first museum dedicated to the character Sherlock Homes and it was opened in the year 1990.

The museum is situated in Baker Street bearing the number 221B by permission of the City of Westminster and it lies between numbers 237 and 241 near the north end of Baker Street in central London close to Regent’s Park.

Interestingly where the museum is situated, was once a boarding house from 1860 to 1936. The house is listed as Grade 2 by the government because of its special architectural and historical features.

Furthermore, the museum features exhibit items from several different adaptations of Sherlock Holmes and recreations of scenes from the 1984 Granada Television series Sherlock Holmes.

1. You Have to Purchase Tickets at the Sherlock Holmes Museum Shop  

When you arrive go directly inside the Sherlock Holmes Museum shop purchase your ticket and then go outside to wait in line.

The Sherlock Holmes ticket prices are 15 Euros for adults and 10 Euros for children under 16yrs.

However, note that the museum doesn’t offer tickets online you have to buy them at 221B Baker St by either cash, credit, or debit card in addition you also can’t book in advance.

4. The Sherlock Holmes Apartment was once a Boarding House

The Georgian townhouse which the museum occupies at 221B Baker Street was built in 1815.

It was formerly used as a boarding house from 1860 to 1936. However, it covers the period of 1881 to 1936 when the stories describe Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson residing as tenants of Mrs. Hudson.

Furthermore, what impresses the most is that there are references to most of Sherlock and Watson’s adventures.

8. Address 221B was the subject of a Protracted Dispute between the Museum and the nearby Abbey National building.

Since the 1930s the Royal mail had been delivering mail addressed to Sherlock Holmes to the Abbey National Bank and they had employed a special secretary to deal with such correspondence.

However, the museum went through several appeals for such mail to be delivered to it on the grounds that it was the most appropriate organization to respond to the mail rather than the bank.

The issue was finally resolved in 2002 when the Abbey National Vacated its headquarters after seventy years and the mail is currently delivered to the museum.
