Nico Hischier was born on 4th January 1999. He is a Swiss professional ice hockey center and captain of the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL).

In 2015, Hischier made his professional debut in his home country of Switzerland. After that, he spent time in the top-tier National League A (NLA) and the second-tier National League B. He joined the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

In his first season here, he was named rookie of the year along with an award for best rookie in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). He was regarded as a strong two-way forward and a top prospect for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

1. Hischier Comes from A Family of Athletes

Hischier was born into a family of athletics. His mother Katja was a sports instructor and his father Rino was a football player for FC Naters. He has an elder brother named Luca and a sister named Nina, making him the youngest of three children.

While Nina excelled at volleyball in Switzerland, Luca plays for EHC Biel in the NL. Katja took both her sons to nearby Visp to learn to skate because there were no rinks in Naters. They discovered hockey there.

This allowed Hischier to play at the top levels of the Swiss under-17 and under-20 leagues. He began the 2015-16 season with EHC Visp. The team was an affiliate of SC Bern in the National League B (second-highest Swiss league).

Hischier was brought to the top team on 13 November that year. This was due to several players being out with injuries in Bern. Hischier would appear in 15 games for Bern while spending the majority of the campaign with Visp.

3. The Halifax Mooseheads Selected Hischier Sixth Overall in the 2016 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft

Hischier was chosen sixth overall by the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) in the 2016 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Import Draft. The draft was conducted between three Canadian major junior leagues (the QMJHL, the Ontario Hockey League, and the Western Hockey League). Hischier committed to joining Halifax.

Hischier lost the team scoring championship to Maxime Fortier in his debut season with the Mooseheads. He was also tenth overall in the QMJHL, with 38 goals and 86 points.

As a result, Hischier received the Michael Bossy Trophy as the greatest professional prospect in the league. He also received the RDS cup as the QMJHL Rookie of the Year. Additionally, he was named to the QMJHL All-Star Team.

On October 7th, 2017, against the Colorado Avalanche, he made his NHL debut. Hischier finished the regular season as the Devils’ second-best scorer (behind Hart Trophy-winning linemate Taylor Hall).
