10 Best Traditional Japanese Restaurants in Osaka

Osaka is the second-largest city in Japan and the home of great food, friendly people, and fun nightlife.

Located in the western region of Kansai, Osaka has a markedly different culture, personality and even way of speaking from Japan’s other major city, Tokyo and the two cities enjoy a friendly rivalry. In particular, Osaka prides itself on being a foodie paradise.

Thanks to its location between the sea and mountains, the city’s food culture highlights freshly caught seafood and high-quality produce.

In Osaka, you can dine on sushi with super fresh toppings, consisting mostly of seafood caught in the Seto Inland Sea, known for its fast tides.

You can enjoy the unique sushi culture of Osaka, such as oshizushi (sushi pressed in a mould).

Other culinary highlights include octopus balls (takoyaki), Japanese savoury pancake (okonomiyaki), deep-fried skewers (kushikatsu) and Japanese barbecue (yakiniku).

The city is home to not only great street food but also traditional dishes. Here is a list of the 10 best restaurants where Osaka locals eat traditional cuisine.

Every foodie knows the giant red crab at Kani Doraku Dotonbori Honten. You’ll know you’ve found it when you see the six-meter (20-foot) crab climbing up a building in Osaka’s Shinsaibashi area.

The restaurant has been a Dotonbori tourist attraction since 1960 and is as famous for its moving signboard as it is for its distinct flavours and savoury crab dishes.

Considering the decoration outside, it’s no surprise that inside the draw is crab, particularly the crab hot pot.

Dive into a plate of crab meat swimming in Kani Doraku’s famous white soy sauce (shiro shoyu soup stock) or order the Kani Kaiseki, which features crab in everything from appetizers to the main course.

Not many restaurants in Japan sell souvenirs but if the crab is your thing, this is the place to go.

Diners will surely be spellbound by the flavour. The super-mini rice bowls are popular dishes that will make you crave more and more.

Another favourite is the anago nigiri (conger eel sushi). The anago is procured from a well-known shop in the Osaka-Sakai area and grilled until tender.

In this acclaimed traditional Ryotei restaurant on the outskirts of Osaka, Japan’s landmark city, Kashiwaya offers modern Japanese food in a dining room designed in the “Sukiya” style, Japan’s traditional format for tea ceremonies:

Fusuma sliding doors, shoji paper screens, tatami mats and Tokonoma reception rooms, each executed in a contemporary style.

The menu is limited to just eight dishes, which are changed every month.

The specialities of the famous Chef Hideaki Matsuo include Amadai, a dish made with grilled tile fish marinated in a salt shrimp “shiokara” dip, and puffer roe boiled in sake, floating on a turnip soup.

Enjoy an intimate dining experience in a private room at Kashiwaya, one of only four restaurants in Osaka with the distinction of consistently receiving three Michelin stars.

Osaka is famous for its food, and Osaka’s people take great pride in their love of their local cuisine.

There is even an expression, “Osaka no kuidaore” which literally means the Osaka habit of eating till you drop, but actually means eating so much you fall into debt!

It’s responsible for such culinary delights as takoyaki (fried octopus balls with bonito flakes), kushikatsu (fried skewers of chicken, pork, and mixed vegetables) and okonomiyaki (savory pancakes filled with vegetables, mayonnaise, bonito flakes, and anything else you fancy).
