Japan is not only known for Mount Fuji, hot springs, food, culture, temples and fashion. This country has also charmed the world through its people.

The country has produced some of the world鈥檚 greatest authors, musicians, directors and thinkers.

There is several well-known activists, actors, emperors, fashion designers and academicians. In the case of actors, most of Japan鈥檚 celebrities start their career as models or as part of a pop idol group.

This grows their popularity which ushers them to other media platforms such as acting in movies and television series. Some of the celebrities that will be mentioned here are more popular in Tokyo and from featuring in television shows on networks such as Netflix.

The local Japanese celebrities are known as tarento while foreign celebrities are known as gaijin tarento. Tarento is derived from the English word talent.

Here are the top 10 celebrities that are from Tokyo.

1. Yoko Ono – Singer

Yoko Ono is a famous Japanese singer, contemporary artist, and filmmaker. She was born and raised in Tokyo to a prominent and wealthy family.

Yoko chose a career in performing arts which were received both positively and negatively by the public. She was married to John Lennon, a member of the Beatles band, until his murder in 1980.

Some members of the public saw her relationship to the band member as being controversial and even tag the relationship to the breakup of the band.

Despite the bad light on her profile, Yoko rose against it all and built a name for herself in the music industry.

Yoko has had a successful career in music, art and theatre even becoming an influencer by motivating the punk and new generation.

Her best-selling album was the season of glass.

2. Anna Tsuchiya – Model, Actress

Anna was born in Tokyo to a Japanese mother and an American father of Irish and Polish descent. She speaks English and Japanese and has an older sibling called Angela.

She began her modelling career aged 14 after her sister, Angela, suggested that she would make a great model. Her sister was also a model, and the tow got signed up by the same agency.

Anna modelled for a magazine collection in Kobe and Seventeen, Japanese edition in 1998. She soon became popular and was signed up for television adverts for brands such as Uniqlo and Edwin.

Anna is considered to be one of the successful models of mixed race in Japan. She is also a singer and has recorded her music in English.

Her single, rose, was used as the opening theme song for the film Nana. The single reached number 6 on the Oricon charts, it was her first Top Ten Hit.

3. Hiroyuki Sanada – Actor

Hiroyuki Sanada, also known as Hiroyuki Shimosawa, is an actor who has featured in a variety of films and television drama.

The most famous movies he has featured in are The Twilight Samurai, The Last Samurai, Ring, Kait艒 Ruby, The White Countess, The Promise, Rush Hour 3, The City of Your Final Destination, The Wolverine and Mr Holmes.

Hiroyuki went to Nihon University and is an all-round martial artist. He is close friends with Jackie Chan.

Other than starring in famous films, Hiroyuki has also performed on stage while working with the theatre company, Royal Shakespeare Company.

His famous television series include Lost, the last ship, and revenge.

4. Masi Oka – Actor

Masi Oka was born in Tokyo, Japan and moved with his mother to the United States when he turned six. He got featured in a television game show aged 8.

He went to Brown University and graduated with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Computer Science and Mathematics.

After graduation, he worked with Industrial Light and Magic as their digital effects鈥 artist. He created programs for the Star Wars trilogy. He did this while taking acting lessons as he aspired to be an actor.

His first professional acting role in the television series Heroes, as a Japanese speaking master. This role made him famous and was soon signed up for another successful series, Hawaii Five-O, as Dr Max Bergman.

Hayao Miyazaki – Animator

Miyazaki is a famous animator that has been behind many animation projects. He expressed interest in manga and animation from an early age. He studied at Toei Animation in 1963.

He started his animation work while in Tokyo Japan at Studio Ghibli he co-founded, also known as the Disney of Japan.

He then started producing a series of hit animations for the box office that earned him several awards. Hayao is known as Japan鈥檚 leading animator.

His most successful animated film is Spirited Away which won an Oscar and was the highest-grossing film in Japan鈥檚 film history.

Miyazaki wrote, drew the storyboard and directed the film himself.

6. Hideo Kojima – video game designer

Another celebrity born in Tokyo Japan is Hideo Kojima. He is known for his contribution to the gaming world. Growing up, Hideo became passionate about action and adventure cinema and literature.

He began his career as a screenwriter for Konami in 1986 and later became the game designer, producer and director.

His premier game was Metal Gear that laid the foundation for all his other games. Metal Gear Solid was released for PlayStation in 1998. This propelled him being among the most esteemed video game designers in history.

Hideo founded Kojima productions; a software house controlled by Konami. He then got appointed as the vice president of Konami Digital Entertainment.

After parting ways with Konami in 2015, Kojima productions released their first game, Death Stranding, in 2019.

In November 2019, Hideo got two Guinness World Records awards for being the most followed video game director on Twitter and Instagram.

7. Marie Kondo – organizing consultant, author, and TV show host

Marie Kondo is celebrated worldwide as the person that encouraged people to declutter their homes and keeping it organized simply.

Marie has written several best-seller books and even has a show on Netflix that has garnered millions of views. She applies her Japanese approach to organization and decluttering which she calls the KonMari method.

Her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, has been interpreted to 30 languages and has sold millions of copies. The book was a best-seller in Japan and Europe.

She uses traditional Japanese Philosophy in her home-keeping techniques thereby becoming a household name. This led to her Netflix series tidying up with Marie Kondo.

8. Keiichi Tanaami – Artist

Keiichi is a multi-genre artist that rose to fame in post-war Japan as a pop artist. His work mostly depicts the contrast between life and death.

He draws his inspiration from the years he witnessed hundreds of bombs that landed on Tokyo affecting his health.

He started drawing at a young age and spent most of his time at Kazushi Hara鈥檚 studio intending to become a cartoonist himself.

He turned his interest to Manga graphic novels after Hara鈥檚 death. Keiichi then studied at Musashino Art University and became a professional artist.

While still a student, he was awarded the special selection at an exhibition held by the authoritative illustration and design group of his University.

9. Hiromi Kawakami – Writer

Hiromi Kawakami is one of the most celebrated writers in Japan. She is known for her offbeat slice of life fiction that won her several literary awards. She has her way with words in her books with vivid descriptions.

Her novels have been translated to more than 20 languages and some have been adapted into television series and films.

Hiromi鈥檚 bestseller includes Nakano Thrift Shop, a Wall Street Journal Best New Fiction pick, Strange Weather in Tokyo, and Manazuru.

She has been awarded by Akutagawa, Ito Sei, Women writers, and Izumi Kyoka prizes. Her work has been featured in English in the Paris Review and Granta.

10. Akira Kurosawa – Film Director

Akira is regarded as one of Japan鈥檚 greatest film directors. He began making films in the 1930s and has had a successful career spanning 57 years.

He is best known for the thriller Rashomon that told the story of a dead samurai. Tashiro Mifune, his close ally, featured in this film and they have worked together in many other films.

His samurai films inspired great series like the Star Wars. This led to many of his Japanese films getting turned to western films like the Last man standing.

He was awarded the Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1990.

Kurosawa died in 1998; he was one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century.
