What is Zumba ?

For those who think Zumba is only a light dance, try a session. You will see that Zumba is actually very physical.

It is a very complete activity. Zumba works on endurance, muscles, coordination and balance. Practicing Zumba improves your cardiovascular capacities as with any other sport. The alternation between fast and slower movements boosts your energy and fat elimination.

Its catchy and festive music inspired by Latins rhythms takes you places. Zumba is therefore both beneficial for physical health and morale. It is an activity that combines sport and entertainment.

You don’t need to be a dancer to practice Zumba, the choreography is simple and easy to follow. The most important thing is to move in rhythm and to have fun. Zumba is intended for people of all age and gender. It is a great opportunity to dance without being judged, in a festive and friendly atmosphere.

Practicing Zumba makes your days happier, funnier and helps you to boost your self-confidence.

Where does Zumba come from and who invented it?

Zumba was invented by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez in the 1990s.

He says he invented this concept after forgetting the music he usually used for his aerobic dance class.  He had to improvise with the music he had on hand – Latin music.

In 2001, Alberto left his native Colombia to settle in Miami and brought the Zumba concept there.

One of his students introduced him to her son Alberto Perlman. They produced together a demo tape that would allow the concept to be purchased by the American company Fitness Quest. In 2005, the Zumba Academy was founded to supervise the training of Zumba instructors.

The concept has continued to develop in many countries since then. France is one of them.
