Top 5 Favorite Places to Stay in Montmartre

Make sure to read our article Top 10 Things To Do in Montmartre before you start walking around Montmartre. This article covers you the best places to visit and gives you some great advice to make the most of your Paris trip.

As far as neighborhoods in Paris go I have always been subtly protective over our beloved Montmartre.

It was the first place I lived when I moved to Paris. My first home in the city of love and my first real taste of what Paris was.

As far as the Parisian charm, whimsey and general beauty goes 鈥 Montmartre has it all. You can see this part of town from almost everywhere in Paris due to the fact that it is built over the giant hill that takes one up to Scare Coer Basilica at the very top.

The rolling streets, cobblestone roads and midcentury architecture make Montmartre one of the most picturesque neighborhoods in all of Paris. It is also slightly out of the city center which makes it an appealing place to stay when visiting Paris.

All through the streets of this hillside village you鈥檒l enjoy ample bars, cafes, bookstores, vintage shopping and some of the best crepes of your life.

Here are the top five places to look at when in need of accommodation in Montmartre.

1. Hotel Montmartre Mon Amour in Montmartre

7 Rue Paul Albert

This hotel makes my top five list but does need a bit of a disclaimer before you make your booking. As you may have guessed from the name, the Hotel Mon Amour centers itself around the theme of love.

An apt subject when in the city of love, the hotel celebrates the theme from the interior design of the space right through to the buffet foods served at daily breakfast. Heart shaped waffles anyone?

The rooms are on theme yet manage to toe the line that would officially classify them as kitsch instead of cute. Each space comes with its own 鈥渓ovebox鈥 kit that includes fun objects and note cards to make ones stay even more romantic.

The hotel is right at the top of Montmartre hill, next to the Sacre Cover church. A free guided walking tour would be ideal to start from up here and work your way down to the bottom where Montmartre eventually meets Pigalle.

Nearest Metro Line: Chateau Rouge

2. Hotel Particulier in Montmartre

I find it hard to make any comparative list about Montmartre without somehow including the Hotel Particulier in the roundup. From having the best hotel bar to also having the best hotel garden 鈥 Hotel Particulier is the obvious choice for places to stay when in Montmartre.

The hotel is built into an old suburban townhouse. To get to it, you have to walk down an enchanting alley way lined with trees and plant life that almost hide the entire hotel from view.

The building was erected in 1871. It was once owned by the affluent Herm猫s and Rothschild families. The interior still reflects this, with opulent light fixtures and expensive velvet finishes.

This is the place to stay when you want to remain somewhat anonymous during the living portion of your time in Paris. Once you鈥檙e through the gates the rest of the world simply ceases to exist.

Average Price: 鈧300 per night

Nearest Metro Line: Lamrack-Caulaincourt

3. H么tel Josephine in Montmartre

67 Rue Blanche

Hotel Josephine is technically part of Montmartre although most would classify its proximity to the Moulin Rouge as strictly Pigalle territory.

The hotel is within a few minutes walking distance from the main Pigalle strip. Here you鈥檒l find restaurants, bars and more peep shows that you probably care to count.

In true cabaret style, the hotel interior reflects an era of glitz and glam; everything from the wallpaper to the vintage furniture looks like it could be straight out of a 1930s art film.

Two blocks south of the hotel you鈥檒l come to Mus茅e de la Vie Romantique. This very small and very private museum is not to be missed during your time in this district. Entrance is free!

Average Price: 鈧90 per night

Nearest Metro Line: Blanche

4. H么tel des Arts in Montmartre

5 Rue Tholoz茅

In a tucked away side street in the 18th arrondissement the H么tel des Arts holds a small amount of guests at a time in a boutique style setting.

The rooms higher up in the hotel boast impressive views over the rest of Montmartre鈥檚 rolling rooftops. The general taste inside of the hotel is more modern than we usually expect in Paris; yet nonetheless cosy and inviting.

Each morning guests are treated to a full buffet breakfast comprised of a variety of both continental and traditional French cuisine.

The major square in Montmartre is the Place du Tertre . The H么tel des Arts is just a five minute walk from this spot. Along the way you鈥檒l pass many quaint cafes; the perfect place for a quick bite or a nightcap.

Average Price: 鈧100 per night

Nearest Metro Line: Blanche

5. Airbnb in Montmartre

Like through the rest of Paris, Airbnb is a fast spreading trend that has seen many Parisian home owners opening up their personal spaces in the name of business.

The aging yet well preserved nature of the buildings in Montmartre make for extremely appealing Airbnb spaces. More and more visitors to the city are opting for this form of accommodation rather than checking themselves into a formal hotel.

Since Montmartre is slightly further from the city centre, the Airbnb prices here are not outrageous. You鈥檒l be getting far more for your money compared to if you were to spend the same amount on accommodation in the 1st or 4th arrondissements.

When booking an Airbnb in Montmartre always take note of the proximity of the space to the nearest mode of public transport. The hill upon which Montmartre is built can be difficult for unfit travelers to work their way up and down every time they want to leave the house!
