The park is located in Kharkiv, Ukraine. It is a park consisting of over 130 hectares of land.

The origin of the park was from the City governing council. He had a proposition to plant trees on 20-40,000 square metres on both sides of the Sumskoy road. The area would be used for horse riding.

Everyone assisted voluntarily with the tree planting. Each tree had a plaque planted next to it showing who had planted it. In 1899 the park was doubled.

1. It is named after an influential Russian and Soviet writer

The park is named after the Russian writer Maxim Gorky. This was two years after his death.

Before his death, he was a financially successful author, editor, and playwright. Gorky also gave financial support to the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP).

He also supported liberal appeals to the government for civil rights and social reform. The brutal shooting of workers marching to the Tsar with a petition for reform on 9 January 1905 pushed Gorky more decisively toward radical solutions.

A statue of Maxim Gorky was located near the entrance of the park from 1980 until 1999.

2. It is Divided into Four Areas with Unique Meanings

Gorky Park is divided into 4 areas. Divided from north to south, each of which has a unique meaning.

Muzeon, Located in the northern area. It is a free open-air museum with more than 1,000 Soviet statues. Which were removed from parks and squares across Russia after the tumble of communism.

The parterre is the main part of the park. It was established in 1928. It emanated from the agricultural pageant that was held in its area after the Russian revolution.

Neskuchny Garden, Located in the middle part. It is the most historical park area with antiques worth visiting.

Vorobyovy Gory (Sparrows Hill), A beautiful nature reserve with a hill next to the Moskva river. From which you can have one of the best views of the city.

3. A Tunnel was to be Built under the Park

There was a lot of traffic congestion in 2005. The City authorities considered the possibility of building a tunnel under the park.

This was meant to relieve the traffic congestion. This proposal did not proceed, however, the authorities went ahead with a plan to build a road through the park.

In February 2008, 9.9 hectares of the park were transferred to the Department of Construction. This was from Sumskaya Street and Novgorodskaya Street.

This was for the Maintenance and Reconstruction of a road, a hotel complex and some private dwellings. At the same time, another 12.8 hectares of parkland were granted a change of status.

This was to enable the construction of residential and public buildings. These grants effectively reduced the park’s size to 107 hectares.

The park has a lot of people who visit. Over 40,000 people come to Gorky Park every single day.
