Top 10 Outstanding Facts About St. Andrew’s Church


 

St. Andrew’s church is an outstanding landmark located in the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv or Kiev. The white, gold, and blue architectural masterpiece dominate the Podil neighborhood landscape. The church is atop a steep hill on the slopes of the Dneiper (Dnipro) River.

The Empress of Russia initiated the construction of the church, in remembrance of St. Andrew. The church’s structure was built in the late 18th century, during the period 1747-1754. It was designed by a renowned Italian architect by the name of F.B. Rastrelli. The church is designed in the historical Baroque style, seen in the church’s external and internal facades.

1.St. Andrew’s Church Was Named After Jesus’ Disciple, St. Andrew

The church was constructed in Saint Andrew’s honor and was acknowledged as the ‘Apostle of Rus’. He gained this name as he was the first Christian preacher in the Kyivan Rus territory.

It is stated that Saint Andrew came across the Old Kyiv Plateau and River Dnipro slopes, and put up a cross. He foretold that the area would be a prominent Christianity cradle and city. His prophecy came to pass as Kyiv is a significant base of the Eastern Europe Orthodox faith.

2.Empress Elizaveta (Elizabeth) Petrovna Ordered The Construction Of The Church

During her visit to Kyiv in 1944, the Empress was delighted by the beauty of the city. She conceived the idea to construct her summer residence in Kyiv. Her residence would include a palace and a church. The church was to be located on Andriyivska Hill.

Construction of St. Andrew’s commenced on the 9th of September 1744, with the Empress laying down the first three bricks to the foundation of the church.
Unfortunately, the Empress passed on before the completion of the structure.

3.The Church Was Designed By Architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli

The church design was initially entrusted to Johann Gottfried Schedel by the St. Petersburg Chancellery. Johann’s project was later rejected and handed over to the imperial court head architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli.

Interestingly, Rastrelli never set foot in Kyiv and so architect Ivan Michurin was called in to oversee the construction. The construction of the church consisted of teams from Russian and other foreign masters who were all under the supervision of architect Michurin.

4.St Andrew’s Church Is Built On A Sty-lobate

Architect Ivan Michurin carried out extensive work on the geological conditions of the site due to the nature of the hill. A stone foundation was erected with a two-story structure sty-lobate, 14 meters high was then designed by Bartolomeo.

Finishing decoration on the external and internal parts of the church began simultaneously. The exterior work however was completed in 1754 while the interior work was around 1767.

5. It Acts As A Landmark In Kiev

The church is 50 meters high (inclusive of the cross), 32 meters long, and 24 meters wide. The five-domed structure is made up of a central dome and four decorative turrets. The drum, which rises in the center of the structure is 14 meters in circumference and 10 meters in height. It has eight semicircle-shaped windows carved into it.

6.The Church Is An Architectural Masterpiece

There is a single entrance with metal doors that are ornamented with crosses and embellishments in the center of the western facade. The Corinthian and Ionic orders of columns, paired pilasters, delicately profiled cornices, cartouches with the emblem of Empress Elizabeth, and Baroque-style ornaments made of gilded cast-iron and copper were employed to decorate the façade.

The church building has an architectural design that makes it appear slim and light. By painting the façade in white, turquoise, and gilding, the church’s plastic figurative expressiveness is significantly conditioned.

7. The Church Is Mentioned As A World and Historical Wonder

The construction of the church is incorporated into the “1000 World Miracles” catalog. In 2002, it was also encompassed in “Masterpieces in the humanity of the Five Continents” which were issued in Germany.

St. Andrew’s Church contains distinctive 18th-century architectural forms, stucco work, wood carvings, and paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries, which successfully combine regional architectural and decorative distinctiveness with elements of the West European Baroque.

8.St. Andrew’s Church Has A Striking Interior

In the interior’s decorative scheme, the painting has a significant bearing. There are about 68 oil paintings on canvas in St. Andrew’s Church, and only one of the paintings was done directly on the plaster of the western vault.

Under the direction of Vyshnyakov, a group of Russian artists known as the “painting team” of the Petersburg Chancellery of Building worked on the iconostasis for St. Andrew’s Church during the years 1751–1752.

Antropov, who was a distinguished artist, painted the classical The Repose of the Virgin, The Annunciation, and The Last Supper. Artists I. Romensky and I. Chaikovsky from Ukraine painted the symbols on the back of the iconostasis.

9.It Is A Museum And Part Of The ‘Sophia of Kyiv’

The church was inducted into the State Architectural and Historical Patriarchate on 10th January 1968. The church became part of the Saint Sophia Museum in 1987 and is a dwelling place for valuable masterpieces. It was inducted into the ‘Saint Sophia of Kyiv’. St. Andrew’s is a functioning temple and religious services are still hosted.

With the fact that the church is atop a hill, there has been a difficulty with the foundation. There has been a shift in the foundation leading to crack. A reaction to the fear of collapse was the setting up of a special committee to look into the changes by the Ministry of Emergency Situations in Ukraine. The doors to the church are now open after several years of restoration.

The uniqueness of St. Andrew’s makes it a monument and a rare beauty of history, painting, heritage, and architecture. It is the most renowned Orthodox temple not only in Ukraine but the larger Eastern Europe Orthodox faith. It is a remarkable work of art that has stood the test of time.
