As of November 2021, the Welsh Rugby Team was ranked 8th in the world. The national team plays at the WRU-owned Principality Stadium and competes annually in the Six Nations Championship, as well as having competed at every Rugby World Cup. Wales is ranked as a tier-1 nation by World Rugby (WR).

Though they are not known to win trophies, they have always pulled upsets against the rugby giants of the world. To this, there are still some very good players who have produced individual brilliant performances to warrant their names to be considered among the Welsh rugby players. 1. Sione Kalamafoni

Sione Kalamafoni is a Tonga international, who plays both as a blindside flanker and No. 8. For Scarlets. At the club level, he is currently enjoying top form after joining Leicester Tigers in 2020. Fans loved him during his three-year stints at Welford Road and before that he had played his rugby at Gloucester. His first experience of English rugby had been with Nottingham when former Scarlets head coach Glenn Delaney was in charge of the Championship club.

Internationally, he has more than 37 caps for his country after making his debut 13 years ago and has an impressive three Rugby World Cups appearances. His most memorable moment is when he was declared man of the match in the stunning upset over France in 2011. With an outstanding first campaign in West Wales, he has also been named the players’ player of the season. Still continuing with an upward surge, he picked up the coaches’ player of the season for 2021-22. No doubt the Tongan powerhouse’s consistent form puts him ahead of other Welsh players.

2. Taulupe Faletau

Tangaki Taulupe “Toby” Faletau is a Welsh professional rugby union player currently featuring for Cardiff Rugby in the United Rugby Championship and has represented the Wales national team for over 10 years. The back-row forward played for Cross Keys RFC, Newport RFC, and Newport Gwent Dragons in Wales before joining Bath in England in 2016.

The now 32-year-old established himself internationally when he featured for the Welsh national rugby in the 2011 World Cup. In this tournament, he scored his first international try against South Africa in the opening match of the pool stage. Despite losing in agonizing fashion, he had already stamped his authority and was now the man to look for in any match that the Welsh team played. He was appointed as captain of the Welsh team for the first time in his career on 11 March 2018, in Wales’ match against Italy, in the fifth round of the 2018 Six Nations Championship.

3. Tomos Williams

Tomos Williams is a Welsh rugby union player who plays for Cardiff Rugby and Welsh national team as a scrum half. He was part of the Wales sevens team during the 2013–14 IRB Sevens World Series.

Quick in thought and deed, and skillful with it, Williams must be a nightmare to play against. Tomos Williams is also known for his sniping breaks from scrum-half but the Wales international also has impressive game-management skills and a physical edge.  He is one of the few rugby players who have been loyal to their teams after playing for Cardiff Rugby throughout his senior career.

4. Josh Adams

Joshua Huw Adams is a Welsh International rugby player and currently plays wing for Cardiff in the United Rugby Championship. He has also represented Wales at the international level, having made his test debut against Scotland during the 2018 Six Nations Championship. Adams has previously played for clubs such as Worcester Warriors in the past.

He had a brilliant 2022 season to earn his rightful place on this list. Strong running, enthusiastic, and hungry for tries, Adams showcased an extra string to his bow by performing competently at full-back on a couple of occasions in 2022, even if his primary role very much remains as a wing. He is also one of the main try scorers for his team. Sadly, injuries have punctuated his year, but he’s still a quality option for Cardiff and Wales.

5. Louis Rees-Zammit

Louis Rees-Zammit is a Welsh rugby union wing who currently plays for Gloucester in the English Premiership and for Wales at the national level. He made his international debut in 2021 when he was selected to tour with the British and Irish Lions.

On 6 May 2021, the 21-year-old was named in the squad for the 2021 British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa, making him the youngest Lion selected since the 1959 Lions tour to Australia and New Zealand at the age of 20 years and 93 days. In this tour, he scored the opening try after 3 minutes. Due to his impressive performance, he was again selected to play against the Sharks and managed to get to the score sheet again in a 54–7 win. By now he had already established himself as a consistent try scorer and did not disappoint again he increased his tour tally to 3 tries in 4 appearances in the final game.

2022 was not any different as he continued to score more tries and thus was able to mature in the game to become a dependable player for both his club and national team.

6. George North

George North has emerged as one of the most talented wingers in the modern game and already has two Six Nations titles to his name and is looking forward to more accolades in the future. The 30-year-old was named in Wales’ squad for the 2010 November internationals having burst onto the professional scene with a two-try haul for the Scarlets in the Magners League earlier that season.

While he missed the Six Nations because of injury, his comeback has been impressive, starting seven Tests in a row and making the Wales No. 13 jersey his own. If his efforts in the third Test against South Africa in the summer and against Argentina in the autumn are anything to go by, then we are seeing a player who will seat among the rugby greats in the near future.

7. Justin Tipuric

Justin Tipuric is a Welsh international rugby union player who plays for Wales as an open-side flanker and the Ospreys Welsh regional team, having previously played for Aberavon RFC.

 He is seen as one of the rising stars of the Welsh game having made his Test breakthrough in the Rugby World Cup warm-up clash against Argentina in 2011. Having produced brilliant performances in subsequent years, he was ruled out of competitive rugby by injury for the first eight months of 2022. On recovery later in the year, he led Wales in the autumn with his performance against Argentina exceptional and he was also inspirational for the Ospreys against Montpellier. At 33, he remains a forward of the highest class, a player respected by pretty all who play with and against him.

8. Dan Biggar

Daniel Biggar is a Welsh rugby union player currently playing for French Top 14 side Toulon as a fly-half. A Wales international, Biggar has also twice been selected to tour with the British and Irish Lions. He has played in both the Six Nations Championships and the Rugby World Cup. He definitely has a future in the game.

9. Will Rowlands

He was the Welsh rugby player of 2021-22. He is an English-born Welsh rugby union player who plays for Dragons in the URC and the Wales national team. As co-captain, he also inspired the Dragons to much-improved performances. An arch pilferer of opposition lineout ball, he is also a force around the field, consistently recording high tackling and carrying figures. Warren Gatland will not want to see him leave the Test scene when he departs the regional scene next term.

10. Jac Morgan

A beneficiary of the Scarlets Academy, Jac Morgan comes in as a Welsh international rugby union player. He currently plays as a back row for the Ospreys. In the 2022 international rugby season, his display against Australia in November was one of the finest individual efforts for a Wales player, involving tireless defense, two tries, and carrying that saw Morgan make over a hundred meters with the ball in hand.

Some question whether Tompkins has the playmaking skills and kicking game to fill the 12 roles at the Test level, but he is Saracens regular and such status isn’t easily achieved. His industry is important to every side in which he plays.

11. Tommy Reffell

Thomas John Reffell is a Welsh professional rugby union player for Leicester Tigers in Premiership Rugby. His usual position is flanker. He was a Premiership Rugby champion in 2022 and made his international debut for Wales against South Africa on 2 July 2022.

His extraordinary form for Leicester in the 2020–21 season led to speculation that he was in contention to be capped by either England or Wales but still remains uncapped. He was named man of the match by the Leicester Mercury following his performance in the Tigers’ win against Gloucester on 24 September 2021. He is still a young player with a bright future and it is just a matter of time before we see him wearing the national colors.

12. Adam Beard

Adam Beard is a Welsh rugby union player currently playing for the United Rugby Championship side Ospreys as a Lock. A Wales international, Beard has also been selected to tour with the British and Irish Lions. He is the only player to have started every Test for Wales over the past 12 months and has developed into a high-class lineout performer who is also adept at defensive duties.

Gareth Thomas CBE, nicknamed “Alfie”, is a retired Welsh former professional rugby union and rugby league player, who represented Wales in both sports. Playing as a fullback and boasting a record 100 test match appearances, he was the most capped Welsh rugby union player until he was overtaken by Stephen Jones in September 2011. He is currently ranked 14th among international try scorers and is the third-highest Wales try scorer behind Shane Williams & George North. He also won four rugby league caps for Wales, scoring three tries.

Interestingly, he came out as gay in December 2009 and was voted the most influential gay person in the UK in The Independent on Sunday Pink List and received Stonewall’s Hero of the Year award.

Samiuela “Sam” Lousi is a Tongan professional rugby footballer. Playing as a prop, he currently plying his trade at the Scarlets after earlier being with the Hurricanes and the New South Wales Waratahs in Super Rugby. He has been capped for the Tonga national team. He previously played rugby league for the New Zealand Warriors. He is one of the very few players from Tonga who have dominated the Welsh league this season.

15. Thomas Young

Not so much is known about this player, but if his performance in the last season is to be noted, then he stands above so many players. Unknown to many the Cardiff player has put in 30 more hits than his nearest rival in the United Rugby Championship tackling chart and has also achieved more turnovers than anyone else. For his hard work in the Cardiff team, he truly deserves a mention in this list.
