Golda Rosheuvel鈥檚 Sexuality: What We Know

Golda Rosheuvel鈥檚 story of self-acceptance and becoming openly gay is inspiring not only to people in the LGBTQ+ community but to her fans across the world. She is a woman who refused to hide in the closet despite being advised by some of the people she looked up to.

The British actress and singer had been in the film industry before being handed the best role of her career as Queen Charlotte in the famous Netflix series Bridgerton. She has also starred in globally recognized films such as Lady Macbeth, Dune, and Death in Paradise among others.

Born in Guyana, Rosheuvel moved to the United Kingdom when she was five years old and has spent the rest of her life in the country making a difference along the journey. Rosheuvel went on to become a queen both on screen and in real life because of her unmatched personality, charisma, and ability to mean what she says and say what she means.

Rosheuvel is a naturally gifted actress whose storytelling prowess goes beyond being excellent on screen. She has demonstrated powerful character in all her roles in the movies and she loves being in positions of power where she can easily utilize her powerful personality whether by imparting knowledge or showing how she is happy being openly gay.

Being born into a family of artists, Rosheuvel was always going to become a superstar in her career regardless of the path she would take. According to her story, she has the best family in the world because of the support she received when she began her journey as a lesbian.

She recalls her brother鈥檚 first words when she first told him that she was lesbian and many people would not believe it.

鈥淢y brother, he was like, ‘Cool. What do you want for lunch?’ Amazing those were his words,鈥� the Guyanese star said in an interview. The reception from the brother opened the door for her to let every member of her family know about her sexuality.

Having a father who is a priest must be one of the hardest situations one finds themselves in when they are lesbian. However, Rosheuvel was surprised by the way her father received the news about her being a lesbian.

Somebody else would have chosen to stay in the closet to the end of their life to avoid upsetting their parents but Rosheuvel was not going to let anything stop her from being who she truly is. She also expected to be met with harsh words from her father when she gives him news that she loves women.

鈥淵ou would think that [my father, being a priest] would be like, ‘hellfire, you’re gonna go to hell.’ Nothing like that at all,鈥� she recalled her father鈥檚 reaction when she opened up. Fortunately, her parents were open-minded people who had interacted with people from all walks of life including people from the LGBTQ+ community. Her father had very close friends who were gay and they worked together in the community.

鈥淭hey had dear, dear friends who are gay…and they worked in the community with Indigenous people, with refugees, with gays and lesbians, transgender people, everyone came through our household,鈥� said the actress during the interview.

Rosheuvel recalls the love she had received from her parents in the process of shaping her career to become one of the most celebrated actresses in history. Beginning her career as an athlete is something she speaks about often. She recalls that she was very sporty when growing up which threw her on fields and tracks where she excelled.

鈥淔rom very early on, I was very sporty,鈥� said the singer and actress referring to her first years in life. She was a natural talent in hockey, athletics, netball, and swimming where she set and broke several national records. She was destined to become one of the best athletes and sportswomen in history until one awful injury ruined her high-flying career.

Being sidelined by an injury opened an avenue for Rosheuvel to switch careers to become an actress where she has proved to the world that she is one of the best we have ever seen.

Growing up with parents who loved each other through good and bad times shaped Rosheuvel鈥檚 life including her relationships where she has been amazing. She praises her parents for setting the best example for her and everyone who lived with them.

鈥淪eeing my parents, my white mother and my Black father, navigate the world they lived in at the time with so much joy and positivity, even in the tough, tough times — and there were tough times — there was always joy and laughter and music and conversation and discussion about the world and about the times we were having. I feel very blessed,鈥� she said in the interview.

She has carried the lessons learned from her parents to maintain her long-term relationship with her lover Shereen Mula. She says that the key to having a long-term relationship is communication, vulnerability, and most importantly making sure that you enjoy the relationship.

鈥淚t鈥檚 very, very important that we have joy, even in the tough times,鈥� says Rosheuvel. 鈥淚n the nine years that Shireen and I have been together, that has been the core element of us sticking together and working things out,” she says. “I’m so grateful for Shireen. Because from day one, she’s been strong enough to do that.鈥�

Apart from having a great relationship and successful career, Rosheuvel added that people need to speak about their sexual orientation and gender identity to let everyone know who they are and treat them right.

鈥淚t’s great to talk about being gay,鈥� says the famous queen. 鈥淭hat’s something that you never see, is it? You know the color of my skin when I walk into a room, but my sexuality — and the joys of that — one never sees until you get to know me. So to be able to talk about that is really joyous,鈥� she added.

Rosheuvel says that being out and proud makes life worth living and easier because one gets to be their authentic self. She advocates for the rights of the members of the LGBTQ+ community and wants people to enjoy their lives without needing to hide their sexuality.
