10 Horrific Facts about the Girl Scout Murders in 1977

On the morning of June 13, 1977, at Camp Scott in Mayes County, Oklahoma, the United States, the Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders took place. Three Girl Scouts between the ages of 8 and 10 were the victims; they were raped and killed. Then, some 150 yards (140 meters) from their tent, their bodies were dumped on a path that led to the campsite鈥檚 showers.

The night before camp started, on Sunday, June 12, 1977, at about 7 PM, the girls huddled in their tents. They included Michelle Heather Guse (9 years old), Doris Denise Milner (10 years old), and Lori Lee Farmer (8 years old). The girls were all citizens of Broken Arrow, an outlying area of Tulsa in Oklahoma.

They were sharing tent #7 in the 鈥淜iowa鈥 section of the camp, which was the furthest away from the tent of the camp counselor and somewhat hidden by the shower buildings. The following day, on 13th June at around 6 AM, a camp counselor saw a girl鈥檚 body in her sleeping bag outside the tent. The three girls were later discovered missing from their tent.

However, two bodies were found lying inside a sleeping bag while crumpled towards the bottom. The other body was visible on the outside. Camp Scott was evacuated due to safety dears.

A suspect with a previous history of kidnappings and raping was arrested but was not convicted of the murders. After 45 years, DNA testing matched Gene Leroy Hart, the main suspect. Here are the 10 Horrific Facts about the Girl Scout Murders in 1977:

The girls had joined other youngsters for camping at Camp Scott located near a forested hiking trail. Everyone who reported at the campsite was given a tent to share with other girls.

Lori, Doris, and Michelle were sharing a tent, tent #7 in the camp鈥檚 鈥淜iowa鈥 unit. Unfortunately, the three girls’ tent was located the farthest from the location of the camp counselor鈥檚 tent.

They were partially obscured by the camp鈥檚 showers. The location of the tent where the three girls were to stay over might have contributed to their easy vanishing without being noticed.

The investigators also found a footprint from a shoe size 9.5 in the blood that was in the tent. A landowner testified to having heard 鈥渜uite a bit鈥 of traffic on a remote road near the camp.
