California is a state found along the Mexican border and it features a diverse economy and culture. With a population of 39.5 million, it is one of the most populous states in the United States of America. Therefore, there is a great range of things that people prefer in terms of food, movies and taste in music.

Looking at the music scene there will be different musicians that produce different genres of music that hail from California as it is rich with diversity.  Therefore, this article will look at ten iconic musicians who come from California.

1. Billie Eilish

Her real name is Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell. She is a singer and songwriter that rose to fame in 2015 after releasing her single known ‘Ocean eyes’. She was born in 2001 in Los Angeles, California. She is one of the iconic musicians from California in that she is the youngest person and the first female to win four major awards after Christopher Cross in 1981. The Grammy awards included a song of the year, album of the year, record of the tear and the best new artist.

Additionally, she has produced several songs that have won her different accolades like the American Music Awards, Brit Awards, Golden Globe Awards, MTV Music Video Awards and an Academy Award.

2. Katy Perry

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson is also known as Katy Perry was born in October 1984 in Santa Barbara, California. She is a singer, songwriter and actress that is well known for influencing the pop sound in the 2010s. Her music career picked up after she moved to Los Angeles and signed a recording deal with Capitol Records in 2007. Some of the songs that made it to the US Billboard Hot 100 are Hot n Cold and I Kissed a Girl.

Having sold 143 billion records worldwide, she is one of the most iconic musicians in the country as she revolutionised the music industry. She has also won several awards and was even on the Forbes list as one of the highest-earning women in the music industry from 2011 to 2019 consecutively.

3. Adam Levine

Adam Noah Levine was born in Los Angeles California on 18^th March 1979. He is a singer and the lead vocalist of the rock band known as Maroon 5. His music career began in 1994 at a band called Kara’s Flowers where he was the lead vocalist. The band failed and Maroon 5 was formed. He has won three Grammy Awards, A World Music Award, American Music Awards and an MTV Music Video Awards.

Furthermore,  he was the coach of The Voice which was a reality talent show. This fact shows that he is an outstanding person in the music industry.

4. Rickie Lee Johns

She is an American Singer and Songwriter whose career flourished for more than fifty years. She is one of the pioneers of the modern music industry and has made music of varying genres like Rock, R&B, Jazz, Pop and Soul. She has also won two Grammy Awards and was on the list of the 100 greatest women in Rock & Roll in 1999.

5. Dr Dre

His real name is Andre Romelle Young and he was born in 1965 in Compton California. He is a rapper the specialises in West Coast hip hop, Gangsta rap and G funk. His music career started in 1986 and has grown and won several awards over the years. He even performed at the Super Bowl halftime alongside Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar.

Additionally, he has also appeared in different films and is also the founder and chief executive officer of Aftermath Entertainment and Beats Electronics.

6. Snoop Dogg

His real name is Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. He was born in October 1971 in Long Beach California.  He is a rapper,  media personality, actor and entrepreneur. He came into the limelight in 1992 after he appeared on Dr Dre’s debut single known as Deep Cover. Snoop Dogg has since sold 35 million albums worldwide. He also sang in the Super Bowl Halftime Show alongside Eminem, Dr Dre and Kendrick Lamar.

7. Omarion

The singer and songwriter were born in 1984 in Inglewood California.  His real name is Omari Ishmael Grandberry and he specialises in R&B music. He joined a boy group known as B2K in 1999 and took on the name Omarion. Their debut album known as B2K topped the charts and that is where he became a household name.

Additionally, he was nominated for the Billboard Music Award Tour in 2019.

8. Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born in Compton California in 1987. He is a rapper, producer and songwriter that rose to fame in 2003. He has been iconic in revolutionising the music industry among his generation.  He has been nominated for 399 awards and won 166 of them throughout the course of his music career. Additionally, he has sold over 70 million records in the United States only. One interesting fact is that all his albums have been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

9. Jhené Aiko

The American singer was born in Los Angeles California in March 1988. She started her career with the B2K and in 2003, she branched out on her own and was to release her debut album but she took a break to continue with her education. In 2011, she made a comeback in the music industry where she sang alongside Big Sean in Beware. The song made it to the Billboard chart and thus boosted her career.

10. Ice Cube

The American rapper started his career in 1986 and his Lyrics in the song N. W. As from the Straight Outta Compton album became popular and thus increased his popularity.  He is among the iconic musician in the United States of America and was even inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
