Violent crimes leading to homicides in the United States have been a major worry in major states. Chicago, one of the major cities in the United States has been facing a major crime crisis over the years. Violent crime in this city is higher than the average in the United States.

Major contributors to these crimes in Chicago are gangs. In 2021, the number of homicides in Chicago hit a 25-year high which was worrying. Street gunshots and stabbings have been numerous in Chicago.

By 2010, Chicago鈥檚 homicide rate eclipsed New York City鈥檚 (7.0 per 100,000) and Los Angeles鈥 (16.02 per 100,000) rates. Chicago鈥檚 homicide rate increased to 18.6 per 100,000 people by the end of 2015. Chicago had more homicides and shooting victims by 2016 than both New York City and Los Angeles put together. Chicago鈥檚 homicide rate increased to 28 per 100,000 people at the end of 2020.

1. Amaris Trujillo

On 20 September 2023, there was a terrible shooting at Brighton Park on the Southwest Side. 20-year-old Amaris Trujillo was in the company of two other people when the incident took place. At around 8 p.m., the trio were driving southbound in the 4300 block of South Rockwell Avenue when the shots were fired.

Amaris was shot in the body multiple times. She was pronounced dead after she was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital. The other two survived the shooting, with the man (19-year-old) being shot in the body and the other 41-year-old woman being shot in the leg. Investigations were opened to get the main reason for the shooting but there are no suspects arrested.

2. The Grime Sisters Murders

On 28th December 1956, 15-year-old Barbara Grimes and 12-year-old Patricia Grimes decided to watch a movie at the Brighton Park theatre. The two Grimes sisters were described as being inseparable even at their school. Little did they know that this was bad.

The two sisters sat at the theatre to watch the first movie and waited for the second with their parents expecting them by 11:45 p.m. However, they never reported back to their home later that evening giving their parents much worry. Hundreds of police officers were assigned to search for the sisters in the city of Chicago.

On 22nd January 1957, Leonard Prescott spotted some 鈥渇lesh-colored things鈥 behind a guard rail during a snowfall. He initially did not believe what he saw making him come with his wife Marie who fainted after seeing the bodies. The bodies of the two Grimes sisters who were nude and frozen were discovered and a report was made at Willow Springs Police Department.

Barbara鈥檚 body lay on her left side, her legs slightly drawn to her torso, and Patricia鈥檚 body lying on her back covering her sister鈥檚 head. The two were believed to have been murdered elsewhere and their bodies were dumped at this location. Patricia鈥檚 face and body had numerous injuries and Barbara鈥檚 chest and injuries resembled blunt forced trauma. Their case remains unsolved to this day.

3. Saint Valentine鈥檚 Day Massacre

The Saint Valentine鈥檚 Day Massacre, which took place on 14 February 1929, involved the murder of seven North Side Gang members and associates in Chicago. On February 14, 1929, the men assembled at a garage in Lincoln Park, Chicago. Four unidentified assailants, two of whom were dressed as police officers, shot them as they stood lined up against a wall.

The killings came about as a result of the struggle for dominance of organized gang crime in the city during Prohibition between the primarily Irish North Siders, led by George 鈥淏ugs鈥 Moran, and their primarily Italian Chicago Outfit adversaries, commanded by Al Capone. The perpetrators have never been definitively identified. However, they are assumed to have been former Egan鈥檚 Rats gang members working for Capone; some people have claimed that members of the Chicago Police Department who were supposedly seeking retaliation for the murder of a police officer鈥檚 son had a role.

4. Bobby Franks murder

At the time, Leopold and Loeb, who were 19 and 18, respectively, decided that kidnapping and killing a younger adolescent would make the ideal crime. Everything, from the abduction strategy to the body disposal, took seven months of planning. The two teenagers searched for their target and settled for Bobby Franks, a 14-year-old son of wealthy Chicago watch manufacturer, Jacob Franks.

On 21st May 1924, Bobby was gagged and then stabbed with a chisel while the two boys pretended to give him a ride. Then they dumped his remains in Hammond, Indiana鈥檚 Wolf Lake. Unfortunately (for the killers), one of the boys accidentally left his spectacles behind; at the time, they were a rare type in the area, and this resulted in their capture. Richard Loeb was killed while he was incarcerated, but Leopold was released in 1958 and passed away in 1971 from a heart attack.

5. The Murder of Joseph Smith

Joseph Smith was the founder and leader of the Latter Day Saint Movement. While working as mayor of the city of Nauvoo, he ordered the destruction of the facilities that printed a newly established newspaper. This newspaper was critical of Joseph Smith and other church leaders which made him make the order for it to be destroyed.

Public outrage arose from this decision which forced the court to order the arrest of Joseph and the others. While in police custody, more than 100 armed men stormed the building as the arrested were waiting for trial. Joseph鈥檚 cousin was shot and killed immediately.

Joseph was also shot at by the angry men who had overpowered security. When he attempted to jump out of a second-story window, he was shot many times, fell to the ground, and was then shot once more by the crowd. Although five individuals were charged with the murders, a jury found them not guilty. Smith was also running for president of the United States at the time of his death.

6. Karyn Hearn Slover Murder

On September 27, 1996, at 5:00 p.m., Karyn Slover left her position in the Decatur Herald & Review鈥檚 advertising sales division with plans to pick up her son Kolten and then go clothing shopping at the Hickory Point Mall in Forsyth, Illinois. Later that evening, a black Pontiac Bonneville with the driver鈥檚 side door open and the engine still running was found in central Illinois on westbound I-72. Although Slover鈥檚 boyfriend David Swann had the car鈥檚 registration, Slover鈥檚 belongings, including her pocketbook and driver鈥檚 license, were still inside.

A few days later on 1st October 1996, the remains of an unidentified female person were found in Lake Shelbyville. They were wrapped in plastic bags and restrained by concrete blocks. Through examination of her dental records, it was determined that the bones belonged to Karyn Slover, and from a bridge overlooking the lake, physical proof including a blood droplet and a fingerprint were found. After being found guilty of murdering Karyn Slover in 2002, Slover鈥檚 ex-husband Michael Slover Jr., his mother Jeannette Slover, and his father Michael Slover Sr. Each received a 60-year prison sentence.

7. Murder of Laquan McDonald

On 20th October 2014 shortly before 10 p.m., a 911 call was made to police to investigate Laquan McDonald. Laquan was reported to be carrying a knife and breaking into people鈥檚 vehicles at 41st Street and Kildare Avenue, Chicago. On arrival at the scene, police confronted him while he used the knife with a 3-inch blade to tear into the patrol vehicle’s tires.

He then tried to walk away from the police officers who had given him multiple verbal instructions to surrender. During this confrontation, Laquan was shot dead by one of the officers. In the murder video, it can be seen that when the first shot was fired, Van Dyke was moving closer to McDonald while McDonald was backing away.

McDonald was struck by the first round, spinning and falling to the ground. Van Dyke continued to shoot at McDonald as he was still holding the knife and lying on the ground. In total, Van Dyke fired 16 shots at McDonald in 14鈥15 seconds, using all of the ammunition in his 9 mm semi-automatic weapon鈥檚 magazine. The officer was found culpable of this murder after outrage.

8. Adam Toledo鈥檚 Murder

A 13-year-old Latino American boy, Adam Toledo was shot and murdered by a Chicago Police Department officer, Eric Stillman. He was shot at in the Little Village neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago. On a body cam video recording, it was shown that Toledo was running away while holding a handgun.

However, as the officer approached him, he dropped the weapon down and raised his arms in surrender. The officer did not show any remorse after Toledo complied as he shot and killed him. Authorities declared there wouldn鈥檛 be any charges filed against the officer responsible for killing Toledo in March 2022.

9. The Murder of Anthony Alvarez

On March 31, 2021, a Chicago Police Department officer shot and killed Anthony Alvarez, a 22-year-old Latino man, in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side of Chicago. On April 28, police body camera footage of Alvarez鈥檚 killing was made public. In it, it can be seen that Alvarez was shot in the back as he ran away from the police while holding a gun.

10. Zheng Shaoxiong鈥檚 Murder

On 9th November 2021, Dennis Zheng Shaoxiong, a 24-year-old University of Chicago graduate, was shot and killed by Alton Spann, a 19-year-old Chicago resident. He was murdered on the sidewalk in the 900 block of East 54th Street in Hyde Park in Chicago, Illinois, in the United States.

According to court filings, Spann and two other people were driving a stolen car when they saw Zheng. He was holding his laptop, and Spann used a revolver to rob Zheng. When the victim was battling the suspect and trying to flee, the suspect shot the victim once in the chest.

After being shot, Zheng was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Centre for emergency services. However, he was declared dead on arrival. Spann was later arrested and was charged with first-degree murder, possession of a weapon, and armed robbery on November 12th.

 

The Chicago Police Department has been working hard and tirelessly to ensure that these homicide incidents are reduced. However, without cooperation from the society, their efforts won鈥檛 work out.
