These waterfalls in Texas are the lesser-known natural beauties that will make your vacation from ordinary to extraordinary, despite the fact that the second-largest state in the United States has a lot to offer (mouthwatering BBQ, bustling honky tonks, spectacular national parks, and more).

From serene bubbling springs to paradisiacal sanctuaries that will make you feel as though you’ve entered another world, we’re breaking down 10 of the top Texas waterfalls, which are dispersed throughout the Lone Star State.

1. Gorman Falls

Gorman Falls, a part of Colorado Bend, is a state park close to Austin that is about two hours away from the city. It is tucked away among the undulating hills and verdant vegetation of the Texas Hill Country.

Many people believe it to be the most beautiful waterfall in Texas, and we might have to agree! Just under 3 miles round-trip, the out-and-back journey to get there is mostly over rocky, open terrain with a steep final push.

In spite of the fact that swimming is not permitted in this delicate habitat, there is a little wooden viewing platform where you may take a breather and eat a picnic lunch.

While you may have heard some of the names on this list, Dolan Falls probably isn’t one of them. One of Texas’s least known and frequented waterfalls, this 15-foot-tall cascade can only be reached by skilled paddlers due to its extreme isolation in the Devils River State Natural Area.

There is a 1-mile climb and 0.5-mile downstream paddling required to get there. You must locate a halting location on the rocky ledge above since the current is extremely powerful and there are class 4 and 5 rapids just beyond the falls.

4. McKinney Falls

McKinney Falls is a simple destination to visit if serenity is what you’re after. It is part of the larger McKinney Falls State Park and is about 30 minutes from downtown Austin, making it the ideal day trip destination.

Two fantastic swimming holes await you after a short hike: the deeper Upper Falls, which features spots where you may “cliff jump” from limestone boulders, and the shallow Lower Falls, which has climbing trees and a little, rocky beach.

It is advised that you book a reservation in advance during the peak season because many people come here to escape the Texas heat.

5. Krause Springsx

Krause Springs is reminiscent of a scene from a fairy tale. There are thick woodlands, 32 clear natural springs, and a turquoise swimming hole that is always a pleasant 68 degrees. Less than an hour from Austin, this gorgeous sanctuary was established in 1955 and has long attracted tourists.

If one day isn’t enough, there are campsites along the stream bank, as well as picnic tables, BBQ pits, restrooms, and showers by the pool.

6. Wichita Falls

The next breathtaking location on our list is a 54-foot, multi-level, man-made waterfall on the banks of the Wichita River that doesn’t require any challenging routes or protracted hikes.

7. Hamilton Pool Waterfall

But few are as stunning as Hamilton Pool in Dripping Springs, whose unmatched natural beauty transcends state lines and more closely resembles a vista from a tropical locale like Mexico or Thailand.

You can unwind among lush vegetation, clear skies, and a stunning 50-foot waterfall that cascades over limestone cliffs inside a partially collapsed grotto. Hamilton Pool Preserve requires reservations in advance due to its high demand. 

8. Westcave Waterfall

We move on to the next waterfall, Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center, in keeping with our theme of Texas waterfalls that don’t really feel like they belong in the Lone Star State.

This spectacular natural feature is a part of a wider sanctuary for conservation that is home to a variety of wildlife, winding pathways, and intriguing caverns. You may enjoy the entire experience by taking the center’s 1-hour walking tour, which meanders through the Hill Country and into the grotto and gives you up-close views of the 40-foot waterfall from various viewpoints.

9. Chalk Ridge Falls

Few activities seem more appealing on a hot summer day than a quick, easy, and shaded hike, especially if the destination is a location as stunning as Chalk Ridge. There are numerous opportunities to swim and wade in the creek that runs beside the route and close to the falls on the 2.5-mile out-and-back track, which is suitable for hikers of all ability levels (and dogs on leashes).
